Technics SL1700, SL1800 suspension differences

I noticed that the suspension on my SL-1800 seems to really be what is says but my SL-1700 is quite rigid.
Is the 1700 supposed to be as "springy" as the 1800?
I want to learn how to properly level and adjust a turntable. Starting with these two.
I also want to learn how to install a cartridge myself. As of now I will have to take my SL-1700MKII to the local hi-fi shop and buy a cart from him. As he will install it for free. But he only sells Grado so it limits my choice.

Cart installation is not too difficult. Two screws, two nuts, four wires.

you'll need a small set of needle nose pliers and a tiny screwdriver.

Alignment of the cart is pretty easy too- instructions, and free printable stylus adjustment protractors are available at vinylengine.com.

So is the service and owner's/operator's manual for your tables.

For leveling the TT, a small bubble level available online or from a hardware store for $5 or less is needed.

Sounds like your 1700 either needs an adjustment of the suspension or the springs are tired.

I'm surprised your local dealer only carries the Grado brand. Most carry a few options.

Cheeseburger cheeseburger cheeseburger. Coke. No Pepsi.

Ok are you asking about both a SL1700MKII and a SL1800MKII? If so yes the suspension should be the same but I've noticed with all mine from that series the suspension does very. Also could be that the motorboard might be loose as there are four screws that hold it in place located on the underside of the bottom. What I've found is you want the platter to have equal springiness when pushed down in the middle. Hence my comment about the motorboard.

Hmmm. The 1700 has no springiness when pushed down. I am going to try and adjust it if I can.
I will head over to vinylengine as suggested!

Have you removed the transport screws, could be your problem.
There are two I believe one located in the center back edge and one center front edge.
They should be the bigger Black screws, not those small ones that hold down the dust cover and yes that what it's called not to be confused with the big clear thing with hinges attached to it.
try getting it level even if you have to shim it then check to see if the platter is level. The reason I brought up about the motorboard was when i changed out the motorboard on one of my 1800's i noticed the platter had a lot more play to it and the table sounded livelier.

I am trying to find these now.
On top or on the bottom? Under the platter?

OK. There were 4 black screws on the bottom. I removed these and now I have a suspension. I bought this from the original owner and it is like new so I am assuming that this TT was never set up properly.
That said, I have backed the nuts on the springs out and am going to do a few turns at a time until it "feels" right.
But the question is....what is "right" concerning the suspension?
