Long time lurker, first time poster…
I’m trying to do my due diligence and figure out what will work best for me. Any and all advice is much appreciated. I’m currently running an old Technics SL-2000 with a ready to be replaced AT95E cart. I listen 99% of the time via headphones (AT m50x) through a Schitt Mani/Magni Heresy setup. With my cart needing to be replaced I’ve recently got the bug to potentially make a change.
I know the SL-2000 was a budget, low grade TT back in the day. I had it serviced a few years back and it admittedly still runs well though it’s somewhat of an eyesore to me with the cheap plastics. Aesthetically I like the look of wood plinth but the music is ultimately the most important piece to me.
I’ve been looking at a Fluance RT-85 (Bamboo) really closely though I’m also considering upgrading my cart to an AT95ML or the 540ML along with a set of Sennheiser 6XX headphones. I would then save for a year or so and reassess the TT situation.
Is the Fluance RT85 going to sound any better than what I’m currently running with a AT95E or with a new cart? If the sound isn’t appreciably different with new cart vs Fluance then I’m leaning towards a new table and saving for a 1210GR or something similar down the road? If I went RT85 I would still save for a 1210/Planar 3 down the road and then just use Fluance as a entertainment table when friends and family are over. I’m also open to other ideas. Thanks!
