Hi All. Got a Technics SL7 at a fair price as it looked a bit battered but fully functional. I did the usual by replacing the tonearm belt and lubricating the rail, etc. The lid was not closing properly on the left which I expected. Good news was that the lid lip was not broken but the black plastic catch was bending to one side so was not latching. Solved this by progressively inserting some thin sheets of clear plastic from some blister packaging to force the black latch out a little. The plastic stays in place of its own accord so far. Greased it to make it smoother and now the lid closes perfectly. I also completely removed the spring clamp on the lid to reduce the pressure on the lid when it is closed with or without a record in place. Visually not noticeable other than no strobe of course. I have no plans to play records upside down or at an angle so it has no effect! Some say that it sounds better without the clamp anyway. So far working well!
Just thought I would share in case it helps somebody. I am happy to post picures if requested.
