Technics SP-15 or SP-25 Really Good Enough?

You are correct...the armboard should have been cut from the same piece of top wood so that it would literally blend with a faint outline...If I worked that hard on something, I would make it match..didn't make sense unless he destroyed the piece he cut out.

To some folks I suppose they might want to drop $800 on a plinth for these tables. That being said, what I see in the ad is a stacked plywood plinth, covered with veneer and wrapped in hardwood, a very nice plinth indeed (although I must agree on the armboard criticism). I just built one of these for a local AKer for his Denon, very near identical to the one in the ad, and I have to say that $800 is a little out of line for the product.

I am not saying that building one of these is an easy or cheap project, and I know that many cannot DIY, but I think he is asking just almost double what he should be.

Your's is very successful and you played the arm board option perfectly. Nothing worse than a near miss. A walnut armboard would look so much better with the Zebrawood. About 1/2 the asking price makes more sense based on the prices for the turntable I see on the Bay presently. I wasn't out to flame the guy, really just wondering if those tables are that good. I'm about to embark on my 1st plinth build, but I will have to but more materials selection and design into it than sheer bulk. My aim is to cure the perceived weekness of the CS-5000's plastic base and bearing support in roughly the same overall dimensions. Otherwise it won't fit in it's drawer in the custom console I built for it a few years ago. Should be a fun challenge.

I don't want to knock the guy either, I’m just having trouble seeing his asking price. Looking forward to your build, I’ve done a few Dual plinths, never could figure out why they would put such a nice table into those cheap plastic plinths. :dunno:

The SP-15 and SP-25 with suitable tonearms and plinths in good working order are good enough to be my main turntables every day. And I am demanding about performance, reliability in long hours daily use, and speed accuracy. I demand durable, reliable, great sounding performance every day.

Good to know. They'll be on my radar not to pass up if a good deal comes along.

I feel you...got a new Dual 721 which is amazing mechanically, etc...but that faux wood plastic tub...Not for me...

In progress...have to keep the plastic suspension support but no more faux wood..I guess I could have rebuilt that out of wood BUT ...I am good but not that good..lol

Answer to the first question re the SP-15 and SP-25 is if in combination with a very good plinth/tonearm/cartridge both are quite good. As for the plinth pictured and the price which I feel is quite high I would choose something else like a Technics SH15B1/2/3 plinth.
