I've been trying to get an amplifier with a phono input for my record player for a while now and dad realised he had one stored. I brought it home and hooked everything up and... nothing.
Quick thing on what I actually have. The record player is a Silver SL550 (not the issue), I have the amplifier itself, and to test something else I also have a Schitt Modi DAC.
Now I don't actually have speakers yet that can connect to the amp, but luckily I have Sennheiser HD650 phones which I plugged into the headphone port on the front.
With my limited stuff that I have to actually test, I thought maybe it was a cable issue somewhere, but I know the record player cable works fine (it worked with an amp without phono input, just really quiet). I tried instead using my pc with my Modi (which is how I use my headphones) and put it through the amp's aux ports and nothing either. My guess is it's the actual headphone port but I can't verify that until I have speakers. The nail in the coffin is no matter what, there is a hissing noise that comes and goes as if I was moving the port in and out and around. This sound is present no matter the volume or tonal level, and it persists briefly after power is disconnected.
I guess what I'm getting at is, is there anyway to verify that the headphone port or some connection to it in the amp is in fact faulty? If it's the actual amp connections at the back, is there anything I can do without spending as much as it would cost to buy a new one?
