Technics su8088 input cable replacement

nttrbl

Changes systems more than underwear
Input selector cable is broken inside the plastic slider on top of the switch, is there any suitable replacements for it? it is flat with a black rubber covering, inside is a thin strip of metal that sits inside another flat metal strip. Any ideas will be investigated and appreciated.

I have a broken one too in an SU-8099.

It will not be easy to find a replacement I'm afraid, also because they are all different. The number of clicks is determined at the knob side, so most likely that should be equal as well as the length approximately as the size of the part that connects to the actual switch.

Perhaps it could be repaired by dismantling it, then shorten the outer part and then mount it back together, but I am not sure if it would be an option. I do not have one at hand at the moment.

This system also comes in other brands and other amps, so perhaps a suitable one can be taken from a cheaper or parts amp.

Nice find, these items at aliexpress might be an option, although it does come at a price. It seems they only supply it as a 6 positions switch, while the 8088 has four flavours; 4 positions for the speaker selector, 6 for the rec selector, 5 for the source selector and 3 for the phono selector.

Now if you dive a little deeper into it, you will find there are a zillion companies at aliexpress offering the same items. That is ok, but mostly they do not have the faintest idea about what they are selling, any question about it is Chinesely politely ignored or comes with a counter question; how much should we send you? And even if you tell them you are not interested (anymore), this question will be repeated for a very very long time (so the dare devil that does take the leap and communicates with them better uses a throwaway e-mail address).

A three position switch is offered at taobao; click, although it will not support the knob without adaptation.

Another consideration; these things come with the switch itself attached, this switch should fit the board of course and would need to have the same layout internally as the old one.

Anyway, personally I would try the repair option first.

One might be able to use the parts of these switches to repair old broken ones, but I have no personal experience with these switches. I would say proceed with caution, and do more research on these items.

For now i opted for using the record selector cable, as this is for my son and i doubt he will ever use the record function. I am still trying to fix the old one as it is no good anyways, just trying to figure out how i can punch new holes in the metal strip without breaking it as it isnt very wide.

At least now he can listen to music and so far we are both very happy with the sound, i like it much better than any of the sa series i owned(sa 424, 500, 600). Could be because it uses transistors over STK.

I think it would be best to drill the holes in the strip. But now that you have used the three position switch, I guess you're missing functions somewhere else?

It's interesting how people think differently when it comes to their perception of sound quality, I'd prefer the SA-600 when it comes to how they sound.

Btw, only the SA-424 comes with an STK. Well, two in fact, (SVI)STK8040's. The 500 and 600 have discrete power transistors.

I've got plenty of audio in box cable.. any pics on the switch plastic cover? Not a big deal if we can hook up the cable side. Silicon band-aid for cover seal. I don't mind helping.. simple mail off light weight.. good sony audio branched cable.
Need to clean this box out anyway. pm me.
