Technics surround sound problem

Greetings!
Can anyone help me with the pitiful problem:
I tried to recreate an audio system set up like my father had years ago.
It consist of a CD player (Yamaha s300)
Reverberator (Alesis midiverb III)
Technics digital sound processor (SH-AC 500D)
And finally 2 amplifiers (Yamaha R-S201)

The purpose was to get the "wanna be" surround sound effect along with the effects such as echo of a large music hall in a rather small room.
The effect came out fine but not without a few problems. The Technics seems to be bent on ignoring the subwoofer, although it's fine with 2 front and 2 rear speakers. I can sort of live with that, especially since my father's system didn't have it either.
The other problem is much more significant:
Every time I play a CD or any other source, a few second pause is executed before the sound is reproduced on the speakers. I tried to trace the problem to CD player, amps, midiverb and speakers but it is clearly coming from the Technics.
I believe I even found some mention of this in the online manual or discussion.
Interestingly enough, my father's system does not have this problem. The only difference in the components seem that he used a DVD player instead of a CD player. Can anyone help me fix this bug?
