In my opinion the best way to listen to Telarc recordings is via their wonderful SACDs but that is not always possible. Sometimes we need a portable version be it cassette or MP3 and Telarc offers many possibilities in the lower resolution world as well.
Telarc Cassettes
Nakamichi Reference Recordings released many of Telarc's finest 50kHz Soundstream masters recorded in real time (1:1) on Nakamichi cassette decks using TDK Metal tape at 70μs EQ. Superb sound quality, in many areas even better than the wonderful LPs and vastly superior than the later CD versions.
Telarc's own cassettes recorded on TDK SA tape at 70μs EQ. Most were classical but a few Jazz titles and a few Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops as well. Excellent sound quality, still better than the CD versions, the I compared both "Spies" and "Chiller" with the CD versions and the TDK SA cassettes totally floored them, the difference would be obvious to anyone.
Has anyone here heard these Telarc cassette tapes? I can't remember if I ever did back in the heyday of cassettes; I might well have, but I know I haven't seen any in recent years after getting a bit back into cassettes, and don't own any. Are they really better than the regular CDs? Worth seeking out? How rare or hard-to-find are they, as cassettes go?
