The other day I was walking the dog on the evening before trash day and there was a weird pile on the curb. Had a sign that said "This is a working 20w P.A. system".

A man in his 80's? jumped off his stoop and came up to me and said,

"I'm getting married and it CAN'T come with me! If you want it, take it before the trash guys get it"

Turned out to be a Telectro SS500W reel to reel player with a built in tube amp--meticulously kept with 2 copies of the manual, notated, original cover, original microphones, and about 30-40 reels.

Fired it up and it worked but sounded horrible, terrible hum out of one channel.

I'll post some photos of my recap, etc.

Not to spoil the ending, but it's working great--

and one of the coolest things in the pile was a number of live recordings by local Philadelphia jazz pianist Father John D'Amico--the link above is a snippet of one date 11-18-82.
Wonder if they are original recordings? Due to the number of them in the collection it would not surprise me.

How did you fix the hum sound?

I replaced all of the old electrolytic capacitors.

if you don’t have the schematic lmk and I can see if I have a scan of it.

No I do not, if you can send that would be great. Just wondering what capacitor did you replace the minimites with, I am assuming you used a modern capacitor?

Seems like I didnt scan the paper schematic.

Based on the photos, their dates, and digging through my email I do see the digikey order for the large blue sprague atom caps (2x) 40uf 450v axial TVA1712's, and one 60uf/350v axial tva1613.
Also looks like i ordered some Nichicon UPW's 39uf/25v

I can tell from the photo I reused at least one other nichicon cap--the gold one.

Hope that helps, sorry I dont have the schematic--I think if you can get it open it should be pretty east to make a parts list.

Also looks like I bundled three caps--one not a sprague to make up the values---so best bet is to open it up and check ctual values. Good Luck.
