Telefunken Commercial

I have the portable version of the one in the first video, but I've never been able to get it to work.

Cool commercial! I'm from a German family. Not fluent in the language but, I understand enough to converse.

wish it wasn't so racist.

Racist??????????

You mean 1:05 - 1:16?

Some eight or ten years after 1945 this was not a tiniest bit intended so be racist, just a cheerful playing black tubes band. This is a lovely friendly innocent commercial from the first to the last second!

Racism... Okay, I respect your opinion...

The cartoon work has a familiar look to it, kind of like the old "Fractured Fairy Tales" or some of the Warner Bros. sideline stuff (i.e., not directly-related to Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, etc.). I wonder if it was a well-known studio/animators or simply an imitation of that particular style.

...Or come home w/a couple of those GORGEOUS Radios...From the number of 'em that show up on The E-Place, every GI in the Fifties-early Sixties must have sent 2 or 3 home, though.. Germany must have been VERY "Rough" duty from about '55 onward... Don't see our guys stood it...(grin)

Racist or not, the content might be objectional to some, and given the age demographics of this forum, ignorance on this subject is not an excuse.

For those of us in a public place, while we ourselves may not find the imagary offensive, a warning would have been nice. I had two black individuals on either side of me while this video was playing, and these machines are very close together; close enough that you don't have to turn your head to watch someone elses' screen. While this did not cause a verbal confrontation, it very well could have.

I just would like to emphazise once more that absolutely no racism was intended. The Germany of around 1955 was a very young democracy and it was as innocent and as candid as a fresh cleaned and powdered baby ass. Does anybody seriously think that the worldwide famous brand Telefunken would place something that got the tiniest slant of Nazi attitude in the mid fifities into the public? Into a commercial???

The USA did a perfect job when they started their democracy campagn in spring 1945 in the dead Nazi Germany and very soon Germany was infected by the spriit of freedom and democracy.

Listen to a 1953 "Telefunken Concertino" which is a part of the commercial. Although of average size, it's sound is MARVELLOUS!!!

:thmbsp:

I find the imagery of the jazz band to be offensive and racist, intentional or not. Would this ad fly today? No way.

Well said. I think people should think of this as a brief history lesson on advertizing in the fifties. There are a lot of things in history that may offend us by today's standards, but it's still important, and educational to review these things.
