Telefunken Console Advice

Hello,

I've been debating whether to pick up this Telefunken Console, i really like it's mid century design and I'm wondering whether anyone can give me any information on its model number/specs etc.

The seller wants around $200 for it. I know consoles can be had for much less but there's something about it's design that's drawing me to it.

Any input/advice/reassurance/caveats would be greatly appreciated.

Sure is cute, and I love Tele stuff, but that seems a bit steep. I would put in an offer for $100 and see. If not wait and see. I bet he will come down if he needs the space. John

Beautiful! You couldn't buy a new piece of teak furniture at that price, and it certainly wouldn't have tubes in it...

I agree with John....$100 is fair. I have bought many German Consuls from $25-75. Unless they are Very Unique Looking...or Mint High Gloss Lacquer...then $200+ is not an issue!! This style is very common... Most are worth more parted out..tubes, amps,transformers,speakers..etc... I have sold 1 whole..the rest were parted out!

I picked up a Tele console similar to this one for free once. I thought I was going to make out with a nice stash of tubes from it. Well yes they were all Telefunken tubes but they were some unusual numbers that aren't worth much. The only tube that was worthwhile was one 12ax7.

If your in it only from the tubes then you should check what is in there. The schematic is usually printed on the back cover of the console. That way you don't have to take it apart to see what tubes it has.

That looks like a smaller apartment model. The back has the model name on it.
The tuner looks like it could be a Dominante' but the face shows that its either a Hi-Fi or an "optional" stereo model. That means with or without MPX unit.

This one wont have a seperate amp inside. It'll be a combo unit chassis and if it is a lower end model then it'll have ECL86 outputs and one ECC83 for pre.
Higher end tuners such as a Dominante or Opus II's will have EL84's and 2-ECC83.
These work the tubes pretty hard though so they arent really a tube farm.

Still a very cool console. I own and use one daily. A small apartment model called the Princess II.

Like you said, the styling alone is very cool and Id say worth $150 if its complete and works.
Complete means back panels intact which are hard cardboard and manilla envelope with service data included inside.

Id take a good look if you are really interested. They are great conversation pieces that work and sound excellent.

If you can meet with the owner in person I'd say do the "flash-the-cash" routine. Two hundred is a bit obnoxious, but a buck-25 or fifty would be OK.

And those old German consoles do sound great. Not a stellar fidelity perhaps, but a good, pleasing juke-box sound anyway.
