Hi all,

I have just obtained a Telefunken Opus 7 :banana: I will be re-capping the radio before using it for extended periods. Anyone have any experience restoring one of these critters? I have heard that they have an awesome sound quality when electrically restored. Any tips / suggestions? Any pitfalls to look out for? This will be the second German radio I will be working on (the first was a Saba 300 automatic 9t which was a bear to recap because the components were crammed tightly and access was a PITA).

Seems like the German stuff is tight. I re-did a big table top Majestic and it was a pita. They do sound nice though.
 
With so many Forums available, I had not noticed that there was an antique radio subsection. Moderators, please move this thread to the antique radio section. It would be more appropriate there.

I think you will find this to be case with any of the vintage German radios and consoles. It seems that they spent an inordinate amount of time engineering the maximum number of components per sq. mm. of chassis space. They should have a sticker attached proclaiming:

No user (with normal sized hands and average vision) serviceable parts inside.

I've restored a Telefunken Opus 7 before. Pitfalls:

The selenium main rectifier is not obvious. It looks like a black can-cap instead. Look for the word "gleichrichter".

Before doing any serious work, clean the bejeezus out of all the sliding switches and controls. Use your favorite contact cleaner here (I use Rid-Ox).

Replace EVERY paper/wax capacitor. Warning: You WILL need surgical tools, and a great deal of patience for this job, especially for the ones underneath the chassis. At least one pair of curved forceps is a MUST.

DO NOT UNBOLT THE TRANSFORMER! If unbolted incorrectly, the core laminations will come loose, and the thing will buzz forevermore afterwards.

If you have to unbolt the transformer, just loosen the four nuts inside the chassis :)

Thanks for the links, Jonboy! I had the US version already, but as you said, the German version IS easier to read and something to fall back on if the US version is unclear.
