Ten Things I've Learned Here at AK About Being an Audiophile

1. Audiophiles purchase components solely upon price and their "beliefs"
2. Audiophiles compare their choices with other audiophiles while passing the Grey Poupon
3. Audiophiles listen strictly to approved "audiophile" music
4. Audiophiles will spend $50k on a system, but nothing on room treatments
5. Audiophiles don't audition gear in their own systems
6. Audiophiles tout the benefits of gear only after they've purchased it merely to justify the acquisition
7. Audiophiles get joy only from listening to the most expensive systems
8. Audiophiles believe that physical laws do not exist in their listening rooms
9. Audiophiles acquire some sense of superiority from owning their systems
10. Audiophiles are constantly changing gear because they are never content with what they have

Surely I've left a few out. :)

I know your list is somewhat tongue in cheek but I can't say I agree with many of your assumptions.

I don't like grey poupon, but since I am an audiophile of course I routinely practice all 10.

Here's #11:
11. If you go to a shop where there are audiophiles, if you don't have a megabuck system or if you don't have $20K cables they will treat you like you have the plague, or completely ignore you

To reiterate - these are concepts I've learned at AK as voiced by others.

OK your not speaking tongue in cheek. In that case I completely disagree with your assumptions. They are totally off base.

If I'm reading this right this is essentially a tongue-in-cheek shot at the misconceptions (IMO) that seem prevalent on this site from time to time.

Judging by E-Stat's posts here, I don't think he believes any of this and might actually take the view that I do - that every last one of these is BS.

And yes, it does seem like a troll for another endless argument thread that ends up locked down.

Of course it all depends on your definition of "audiophile"—or your concept of one.

If the conditions you relate seek to form a definition, then it's self-fulfilling.

If one starts with the assertion that an audiophile is one who enjoys listening to recorded music and revels in re-creating that concert or recording session in their living room with as much fidelity as possible, then the universe of what constitutes an audiophile expands to include those characteristics in the original post . . . as well as the rest of us who simply enjoy listening to music with as much fidelity as possible!

"High Fidelity" was a great term coined decades ago and should still be used to describe what we all seek today. :thmbsp:

I'll call myself an audiophile but in my own mind that leaves behind the pejorative insinuation. :D

Once again, these are not my assumptions.

I report based upon what I regularly read here. Imagination not required.

Any new folks discovering AK will encounter all of these (except perhaps for the Grey Poupon). :)

Some American guy told me assume means "making ASS out of U and ME" ;-)

Edit : This was a comment on 4-2-7 his comment but yes this thread goes really fast.....

So man up and say if you agree or disagree with the dick attitude you "reported".

Wha-wha-what-WHAT? NOT ME !

A bit of ugly truth will always strike a raw nerve. Although each and every audiophile doesn't do everything on the list all of the times, it doesn't take much reading to come across the quirks and pissing contests that invariably ensue when you throw a bunch of guys with a common hobby together.
Stop trying to deny your humanity and continue to enjoy wallowing in it.

Quite frankly, none of those sentiments that I've merely observed. Two of them are found in a recent thread alone.

We lament about the next generation not sharing the love of music and the hobby dying, but this is what newbies find when they come here and (presumably) want to learn about it.

Is that the image we want to project?

edit: when I worked for a hi-fi shop in the 70s, I encountered one guy we called "Al Gear" who represented perhaps half that list. We just shook our heads, felt sorry for the guy and kept selling him stuff. He purchased DQ-10s. Sold them. Purchased another pair. Sold them. Purchased MG-IIs. Sold them. Purchased third pair of DQ-10s. He invited the guys from the shop to his house. Musical library consisted of perhaps a dozen records, half of which were Sheffield or Crystal Clear.
