Can a function generator such as a Victor VC-2002 be substituted for a audio generator or are they different animals?

If you are pretty good with computers and already have a laptop or spare desktop with a digital audio out, you can do more and may get better quality per $ by buying an external DAC and using the computer as your generator. That said, turning dials is fun.

The only issue is he noise floor. But for most measurements it really doesn't matter. When your doing distortion measurements at a fraction of a percent it would matter, but only a few need to be able to do this.

In post #9 I mentioned the difference. An oscillator will have distortion less than .10%. A function generator will be greater than 1%

On the "So you want to repair Audio Gear, Eh?" thread the OP says that you need an "Audio Signal Generator". Is a Hewlett Packard 204c considered to be the same thing? It looks very similar to some of the models he mentions...
