Test for Tone Deafness

similost

Rockin and Rollin....
So I'm sure you saw the other thread... so I thought HEY.. lemme find a test..

I found this one. Pretty cool. I'd take it on something other than a laptop with crappy speakers though. Some of the chords are harder to hear the notes comprising them with bad speakers...

Anyway, it's also part memory test too, but you do have to be able to hear the notes in your head, so it's kinda a cross between tone deafness and hearing memory...

Here's the test. Post your results... I ended up with 83.3% (79th percentile, misisng 6) not really trying real hard because of the lack of fidelity. I'm going to try this at home too on a good system tonight and see how I do..

hhhhmm.. usually you post something like this here and everyone is jumping in quck to tell how well they did.,... anyone even taken it?

I did....I kind of lost interest half way through and ended up with a really bad score. There is too much background noise at work.

Yeah, I'd take it when you can really concentrate on it... It's not an easy one for sure... I'd also only take it with a good system. it is an interesting test though.. Once you are done with it and they show the bell curve, it's even more interesting...

I was kinda starting to lose interest at first, but then I closed my eyes and started to concentrate on what I was hearing, and it kinda became interesting. Lots of strange notes, chords and patterns...

hhhhmm.. well oK.. I thought some might find it interesting.. I almost got bored with it, but then I decided to really listen, and it got interesting for me..

For passages I could suss out, I did well. For passages I couldn't, my memory issues got in the way (ADD). Anyway, I scored just to the right of the peak on the curve. Unfortunately, I got a phone call at that point, and had to move on, so I don't remember what my actual score was.

I agree, it really seemed to be no more than a memory test, and not too well done at that. The passage would start immediately after you hit the button, and too much time passed between passages. Groovy synth timbres, though! :D

80.3% here....which was fine.
If you were actually tone deaf it would be really difficult for you to pick any right!
They play pretty quickly and it would be nice to be able to listen to each test sample more than once. Very few people have tone/note memory with one pass. But then that wasn't really the test.
Each time the next sample started it was so quick you hardly had time to remember what the first one was and if it had a lot of notes to it you miss notes and then it was just more of a guess.
Of course it wasn't a note memory test it was a test for tone deafness and it would certainly sift out someone who was tone deaf.
So if you did get a low score you might want to look into the possibility.

I'm going with memory problems :p:

When I used to really be into playing bass in my teen years, I played mostly by ear, so I got really good at listening to something, then playing it back. I think a lot of years of doing that really helped to train my note memory and tone quality..

Too young for that.. give it a few more for that to kick in...

I'm afraid of all the welding and some metal smelting I did over the years. I know that plays in pretty heavily with Alzheimer's too..

I just took it on my phone speaker and got 80.6. I guessed on a couple when my concentration drifted and my wife asked me a question during one of them, but I was pretty confident of the rest. Fun little test.

80%, but more memory test than anything.

Hearing a random mix of notes once, then hearing another random mix and having to compare is tough.
It's like trying to sing a song after hearing it once (and songs are a much less "random" mix of notes).

On the ones I DID get, it was usually when the wrong note was played earlier int he mix, or when it sounded like actual music.

I'm a drummer, but have messed around playing bass. I am usually able to pick out a bass part after listening to the melody for a minute. I tend to mostly play by ear that way, and find myself more often than not, able to keep up with the changes in songs I'm not familiar with, though to be honest, I mostly tend to keep to the circle of 5ths in that kind of situation. With songs I'm familiar with, I find I can just find the pattern and modulate it up and down the neck as appropriate.

I have fun! :D

Check out the adaptive pitch test on the same site. I find it more interesting, although it's more tedious in a way. 0.975Hz is my score. I think 1/256 octave pitch resolution is acceptable. ;)

i am tone deaf and proud of it .. it makes it interesting working with bands as i am on the mixer .. i meet lots of people with good hearing that help me out setting things up like eq and stuff

If you are tone deaf you wouldn't even get the easy ones in that test correct and it really doesn't have anything to do with note memory.
Even if the pattern was the "same" you wouldn't hear a difference.
If you noticed most of them were "different"...there were only a few that were the "same"!
If you got the "same" ones mostly wrong or selected "same" for a majority of the different ones then your score will show your deficiency.
Anyone who is actually tone deaf would pick "same" most of the time and the ones that actually were the "same" were controls in order to rule out 50/50 guessing.
If you aren't tone deaf you really should have gotten most or all of the actual "same" ones correct! (or at least 70% of them!)
Pitch accuracy and note memory I think would be a different type of test...
