Test record dilema

Okay, So I replaced the one I had because it was warped with one from needledoctor

http://www.needledoctor.com/Ultimate-Analogue-Test-LP

Great stuff..very detailed...except...it requires meters or an oscilloscope to read !!! I don't know how to use this album and it is vague on instructions.

like when it says the AC millivolt meter should stay constant across all frequencies (in one of the tests)...Okay..WHERE the HELL would I hook a meter ?

Or using an IMD tester. Or oscilloscope.

From the front it appears designed for turntables. On the rear it says it is designed to calibrate a turntable or cutting lathe....Geeze...it should have come with equipment...

Another 40 bucks wasted....:tears:

You have computer with audio card. This is your instrument. Just get proper software - from $100 to a few hundred, depend on what you need to measure. Precision is sufficient for TT measurement even without use of external audio interface.

If you have an iphone or android, you can download "PlatterSpeed" to test W&F with track 10's 3150hz signal.

Okay...now it starts to gel

Yes, I can easily capture, have the perfect rig for it...

But what software (please ..easy to use thanks...I am very proficient with software but this is new territory)

Yes, I will keep it. The album is flawless..well made, centered correctly..

I cant use the w&f app..I have all Windows 8 devices (Microsoft employee...:D )

Oh, it won't be centered correctly. :D When I had my Nak Dragon CT, I never played a record (including this one) that didn't have to get centered.

Something between TruRTA (highest option needed), which has most needed features, and Adobe Audition (has very high resolution FFT). Or better get both.

Thank you

TruRTA looks good...easy to use ? The test album tells me what I am measuring for but want to be able to translate that to the software...I also have an issue of NO MONO switch...so some test will be a challenge

To get a figure of the w&f You can (must) use android app for testing according to IEC386 with the 3150Hz signal. It´s the only that works for a proper reading of these apps.

Gusten is referring to the platterspeed app. He is correct - I posted the email I'd received from Dr Feickert in another thread - but the good news for iPhone users is that their app is going to be upgraded to cover IEC386. No date, but I'll check again later this year.

Can't I use the hz function

In TruRTA ? The record says I can use a flutter meter or use the hz function ?

Hi,

TruRTA is just a (good, if calibrated) 1/3 octave analyzer AFAIK. It won't help in measuring the W&F, and is also limited for frequency analysis. For practically all vinyl adjustments & diagnostics I use the FFT and phase display in Adobe Audition 3, which offer much more possibilities than TruRTA but still not W&F analysis. Not the same price tag as TruRTA though. Audacity has a frequency analysis tool, just not nearly as usable as Adobe - but at least it is free.

I am not aware of a W&F analysis tool running under Windows. Not saying there is none, I just haven't seen one, but the classics like RMAA don't have it. For that I have a good old DIN-compliant analogue meter.

If you buy its highest version, it comes with 1/24 octave resolution. Still Adobe Audition 1M points FFT is bettter, but cannot do it in real time. There used to be a good tool called SpectraLab, but it seems to be discontinued now.

Haven't used trueRTA in probably 8 years, but when I did, the oscope piece was pretty decent. If it's improved over the years, I think it would be competent for a hobbyist type.

It looks very good ..probably MORE than sufficient for my needs...

1/24th octave is still not precise enough for the kind of work you do with a test record except the most basic stuff. The current Audition does FFT in real time up to 64k samples, which is quite good enough. With 1M samples it can't be real time anyway, you need to make a trade-off between time and frequency resolution, or use the Gabor transform and I don't think it is done in a PC audio application.

If you need to do more directly useful measures such as weighted RMS levels, there are not many options in the Windows apps anyway. This is all pro stuff.

That is why I mentioned SpectraLab. If OP can find a copy, this would be the best option.
