Very interesting. I couldn't hear 16khz at all but I suspect it was the computer or headphones cutting it off. I did have a pretty significant slope from -3db at 30hz to -24db at 12khz but who knows how much of that is due to the computer or headphones frequency response. I suspect these stupid headphones I'm using at work were designed to please the kiddos and emphasize the base a bit.
 
That's an interesting test. I think my headphones aren't very flat though. I had to drop about 4db each note over 1k until 16k when I couldn't hear anything until it was quite high. If that's the way my ears actually work then I've got awesome hearing 1k-14k but then it drops like a rock.
 
Quick thought in the morning
If our hearing has different "eq" curve, its not strange we like different speakers and gear.
I wonder how much of our preferances are "learned" from what others hear :)
 
As much as audiophiles fret about sub-bass and frequency response at the limit of human hearing, it's amazing how little actual musical signal is there. If you're hearing out to 12kHz, you're really not missing much. Back in the late 80s when I maintained cassette tape duplicators, we had one line that was ruler flat to 16kHz and another that only made it just beyond 12kHz. Both rolled off very quickly above their flat range. With pop recordings, it was very hard to distinguish between tapes recorded on the two in blind A/B tests.
 
It really doesn't matter what your bandwidth is. If you know what a live concert venue should sound like you'll know what a good sound system sound like. There is more to listening than the frequency spectrum. My better can barely hear above 10 kHz, yet she can spot inconsistances between 50 and 1,000 hz immediately. Being a reed player if she can't hear the reed sound correctly she won't give any more consideration to a speaker. Peaky tweeters turn her off, too. Though she can't hear the high frequencies, she says a peaky tweeter causes a sharp pain in her ears. Especial systems from JBL using ring radiators and Bose speakers.

That 16 kHz tone is really painful if you crank it up a bit through my iphone headphones
