Texas Theater, Saturday night 11/22

this is something cool-- i live in the part of dallas known as Oak Cliff, and always have. some of you may recognize Oak Cliff as the part of town where much of the assassination drama played out. i grew up on 10th street, just a few blocks from where Oswald is alleged to have killed Officer Tippet, and grew up going to the Texas Theater where he was apprehended.

this saturday night, 11/22, there will be a special showing of 'JFK' by Oliver Stone in the 85% restored Texas Theater, which i will be attending. apparently, no period attire is necessary, but my wife and friends will all be going. i haven't been inside the Texas since probably about 1965 or thereabouts. it should be interesting.

will report back.

Hey Shrink!

I worked across from the old theater on Jefferson for about 13 years.
A lot has changed since I left there in 97 & that place should have been better preserved due to the history linked with it.

I wonder if the duplex on Beckly where Oswald supposedly rented a room is still there?

That is a nice thing to have a showing there. Wish I could make it.

what did you do for 13 years across El Super Mercado Jefferson, rome? i'm tryin'ta think what was there back then....? and yes, the Oswald duplex is still there, and Oswald did not 'supposedly' rent there, he really did, for sure...

will take pix...

Ahhhh Shrink!
I just heard the rumors about about him renting there. Man, that is some history for Beckly Ave.

I worked at Oak Cliff Office Supply that was right across from the theater.

Yea, the Hispanic influence has certainly moved in there & I think the old 24 hour pawn shop has moved or went out of business. I never thought that would happen.

Hope you do take some pics & I may just take a ride with my girl one day this week over there.

the plan is for a complete, 100% to mid century art deco originality. built by howard hughes in the 1920s, was the anchor for jefferson boulevard up through the mid 60s, then white flight drastically changed the entire area, and the OC went to sleep for about 20 odd years. there was a resurgence toward gentrification in the mid 80s, but the city tore up the boulevard for repairs etc for so long the resurgent bidnesses couldn't hold out, and then the late 80s bustout put the boulevard back to sleep, but rents low enough that poor immigrants could afford them brought it roaring back as El Mercado Jefferson -- you go a couple blocks north, and you find the funky cool of West Davis and Bishop Arts District and you have the OC in all its splendor.

back in the day, i did bidness at Oak Cliff Office Supply. cards and the like. may even have gotten my son's graduation invitations done there. very cool, Rome

Ahhhhhhh Shrink!
Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee pic.

Man, Wow, Geeeeeeeeewiz, & other accolades I exclaim as that pic brings back the memories. Going down to Nick's to eat lunch. Also, going to the restaurant with the bull on the top of the building. The name escapes me now, due to old age memory lapses.. :D

Yea Shrink, the arts district is nice. Bishop Grill was a favorite of mine, even when they were near Colorado. Kessler Park is still a nice place.

I may have seen you come into the supply back then.

Nice,
Rome

i know you're joking, spidy, but the Carousel is long gone. but we have plenty o' titty bars, just not downtown anymore.

Rome, the cow on top is CharcoBroiler, still going strong. Ginnie's Bishop Grill was on Bishop in the old falling down house, but if you recall, they moved across the street to the old brick warehouse bldg. and stayed there for many years, but now are closed too, with Hunky's Hamburgers successfully taken over the space.

do you remember from the mid 80s Boulevard Cafe, which also would have been very near OCOS but across the street? nice young couple ran it, but got shut out when the Boulevard stayed torn up for nearly a year.

You are correct sir concerning the CharcoBroiler. Man, they had some fine food & their Chicken Fried Steak was excellent. I remember going to Ginnie's when they were close to the viaduct going into downtown. A few years back, my girl & I ate lunch when she moved to Bishop Ave. I hate to hear she closed, so sad. I don't know about Hunky's as I have not been over there in quite some time.

The Boulevard Cafe does not ring a bell. I am sure I passed by it & did not stop in. I often think of the guy that ran the Christian bookstore. I think the name was "His Place," so don't quote me on it. He had the most mesmerizing laugh. Great times back then & memories now.

Nice sentiment,
Rome

11/22 is my pop's birthday. His family is from Texas and I've got many relatives in Dallas, so I always remember that date.

At a family reunion a decade or so ago, when I was in my Hunter S. Thompson driving stage, I did an impromptu tour of the "grassy knoll" and other Oswald areas, cursing the many "dry" municipalities, damaging a number of median strips, and taking short cuts through all those alleys in Dallas.

Great fun.

HEHEHE KeninDC!
Glad you made it through it all. Don't come in the Summertime, wait unto Fall or Spring. Not as dry. :D

Hi Shrink!
I hope you can help me with this one. I remember a couple of five & dime stores on Jefferson Blvd. One was M.E. Moses at Madison I am pretty sure & there was another one at the corner of Jefferson & Bishop. If you can remember what the name of that store was it would be deeply appreciated.

chip-- CharcoBroiler is going strong, but not for $1-- filet mignon, baked tater, salad and drink for $9.95--

i believe you are thinking about McRory's, Rome

skippy-- when i was a kid in Oak Cliff in the 50s, 'a small town in texas' is exactly what it was, but it was appended to thse big town in Texas called Dallas-- there is over a century's worth of history involved in the curious relationship of Oak Cliff to Dallas-- annexed to Dallas in 1903, the motion passed by 3 votes.

Even though the Carousel is gone, isn't the building still there? It's now an italian / pizza restaurant, or did that close too. I ate there a few years back with my brother, who told me afterwards what the place was.

I think that you may be getting your "mob hangouts" mixed up ... Campisi's is the Italian/pizza restaurant where the New Orleans "mob boys" met (meet?) ... it's never been downtown ... it's on Mockingbird east of SMU.

Touche' Shrink!
I called my girl today & we both lingered in thought about the title of that place. She worked in the City building about the same time I worked over there, but we had not met at that time. Funny how things work out for you.

Well, after a few minutes she mentioned something like McCroys. You sir have given me the right answer & I will certainly tell her. She will get a kick about it.
