Thank You, Les (Paul)

Lou Pallo played with Les Paul for about 40 years and still leads the Les Paul Trio at the Iridium in NYC. He has put together a tribute cd/dvd/lp to Les with an amazing cast of characters to help him. Keith Richards, Billy Gibbons, Steve Miller, Melinda Doolittle, Slash, and more.

The music has been recorded and editted completely analog and was going to be released on cd and vinyl. The release date is Sept 10, so we shall see if vinyl is still in the mix.

A dvd is being released as well, with old footage, the performances and discussions with the artists. I had a chance to see the dvd in a pre-release state several months ago and the music is great as are the conversations with the artists. They managed to capture the artists very naturally and this aspect had great appeal to me.

So if you like Les Paul or Lou Pallo or candid conversations with artists or tributes in general, then you may wish to take a look at this. Personally, I am very excited to hear and see the final product at home!

I was fortunate to meet Lou Pallo, his daughter and granddaughter at an Iridium show that featured Todd Rundgren. Lou was extremely approachable and engaging. It was a pretty wild night as it was the night Gibson guitars introduced the "Lou Pallo Signature Les Paul" model. Basically a Les Paul with one humbucker and one P90, I don't remember which was in which position.

At the end of the night, Gibson announced that they were sponsoring a party for everyone in attendance... open bar and free buffet for the next hour. Needless to say, the entire place proceeded to get hammered. Todd was already hammered, quite evident from his performance. Also in attendance was Billy Squier, hammered too. My date and I wandered backstage, chatted with Todd for a few minutes, ran into some mutual acquaintances, I complimented Billy Squier (for which I received a great big hug like I was his long-lost brother!), got comp tix for Todd's performance the next night at the Blender Theater. Finally left at 3AM, and ran into Lou Pallo and family in the parking garage across the street. More hugs ensued all around, and we went home.

Very odd night. It was as if someone dosed the beverages.
