I own a lot of vintage gear. They are slowly having problems. The first gear I bought was a Pilot 602. My ears were young and thought it sounded great. Had Quadraflex speakers. This one now is needing recapping, works but sound is distorted. Then I bought a Kenwood KR7600 new with a pair of HPM 100's in 1976. This one after 43 years of service finally quit. Relay not clicking in. Bought a used KR9600 and had it gone through and worked fine for years then the left channel started a cracking sound, retired it for now. I acquired a Pioneer SX727. This one still sounds great. I also inherited my dads old RCA it has a RS177a amp. This the one I've recapped but having trouble aligning the tuner.
I have to admit to using the receivers and speakers as subs for my surround system. This allows me flexibility.
Hearing four HPM's hit as a sub woofer you better have everything taped down as I have knocked a lot of items off the walls.
I have more, I just enjoy listening to quality sound. This is more than a hobby. Its an addiction.
As I'm older now I'm listening to Lee Sklars bass playing or Waddy Wactells guitar for example.

Welcome aboard.
The crackling in your KR-9600 is likely a small signal transistors failing - a common occurrence with older gear.
