Am I the only one whose interests collided in episode 3 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when a pair of modded HPM-100s turned up in the background? What an incredible touch from the set designers!
Pioneer HPM-100s are probably the most divisive speakers ever made. Devotees love them and wouldn't want to listen to their favorite tracks on anything else. Music purists and audiophiles would rather burn their ears off with a blowtorch than listen to them for any longer than was absolutely necessary.
In episode three of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, while in the lair of some villain or other (can't remember her name) an HPM-100 pops up in the background for a couple of shots. But not any old HPM-100, it's modded with all-original drivers contained in a Perspex box. I've seen the design in web searches before, but never expected to see it featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Aside from the fact that it looks epic, this speaker seems like an odd choice to feature in the show. But when you think about it, modernized HPMs may be the perfect choice. The Winter Soldier is a 130+ year old, ageless cyborg, while the Falcon is a future [spoiler warning] Captain America. The old, balanced with the new, making a speaker designed in the mid 70s, updated with a new funky cabinet, completely appropriate for the show.
I have a pair of HPM-100s myself and love to bring them out for rockin' parties. I don't listen to them all the time, but when I do, I like to shake the floorboards. Having said that, I have no idea what these ones would sound like with no sound dampening or sound absorbing surface at all in the design.

[Edit: Someone has now told me they aren't modernized versions, but the Perspex HPM-100s were showroom models also built in the 70s. Oh well. They still look awesome.]
