The advantage of the Yammie twins

As some of you may know, several Yamaha receivers are 'twins'. By that I mean that the CR-620 and CR-820 use the same chassis and case - AND the same circuit boards. True also of the CR-102 and CR-2020. While preparing a CR-1020 for a fellow AK mamber he acquired a TT with a MC cartridge - bummer, the CR-1020 does not do MC. But the CR-2020 does - aha found a circuit board from a CA-810 with the 5-pin pre-amp chips, found all the other parts, so I installed the MC pre-amp circuitry in the CR-1020. A little creative wiring changes and - Voila!. A CR-1020 that does MM on Phono1 and MC on Phono2. Time to put on Simon and Garfunkels 'Keeping the customer satisfied'.:D

Very interesting merrylander. I knew several Yamaha's used the same case and chassis, but didn't think they'd use the same circuit boards. Nice tip to remember!

It's wonderful what a little (or in Merrylander's case, a lot :D ) of expertise can accomplish... Well done! :thmbsp:

Rob, good job! Maybe we need a sticky to start keep track of these common items?

How about some pics of the finished product? :D

Yank

A picture would only (barely) show a section of the tuner borad that is not normally populated with some electros, tantalums, and a few resistors. You can barely see the two five pin ICs that are at the centre of it all.

On these twins there is a number in black ink that is different for each model, but right below that number is a white silk screeened number that is the same for both boards, 1020 or 2020.
