The Arena GOLD MINE Are Mine Now!!!

Kelly- the drivers are recessed so it would not be possible with the same baffle plate- damn!
Anthony- thanks for the confidence vote, I will need that and a few more things to get it right. Hopefully when I get the second baffle off it will help me. Those original caps are farn near dust in my hands!! Nicely laid out though!!

Actually I was thinking you should build a new one for one side. Seems well worth the effort and you have woodworking skills.

I'd forgotten that the original T27 had unpainted aluminum domes. Particularly because all the drivers are KEFs, I would suspect that reverse engineering the crossovers would be relatively straigtforward, other than dealing with the odd impedances produced by the various multiple dirvers == Arena probably didn't stray too far from KEFs suggested crossover points for those drivers.

WHEWWW got lucky! I wrastled to other baffle over and found the xover in tact!! Now I will replace everything with mylars of known values and retest- should be very interesting!! Sure had a ton of high quality drivers in them incl;uding xover net works soon!!
Kelly I will donsider the baffles for another day as that will be a labor intensive project. Having the MI would be an excellent thing given all the drivers and such but keeping them original for now and doing some serious listening will be in order. I kinda think of these as the Danish version of the AR9's! The certainly weigh about the same.
This is my first large import speaker as I recall, except for a pair of smaller studio Kirksaetters, they were real nice sounding. I have a funny feeling these will really need the power- the previous owners Dad had them on a Pioneer 1980 amp before putting them into a closet about 20+ years ago and forgetting about them. See if my 1600 Comtech Crown can wake them up a little!! .
The drivers and all the rubber suroound are in great shape- no driver dings or anything blown as I can tell...yet.

I believe you mean T27´s.

Anyway those do not appear to have the original 1" domes. The Danees must have modded them.

Good luck on the capacitor quest, BTW.

DUHHH on me you are correct they are KEF T27's least that what is sez on the backs!!

Arena Nudes

Hey Kelly-

Here are some nudes of the backside of the baffle plate- whole lota drivers shakin' there! The 3 KEF 110 mids as you can tell are in their own enclisure so no shots of them

Also are the new capacitors in the network. Should be able to reset the baffle back tomorrow and sit back to listen for a while- so far just too much work! I will try to get a shot or two of the inside padding and the passive KEF woofer that is down foring.

Later DC.

Awesome :thmbsp: should not be real hard to construct a mirror imaged baffle board. Is the cab just one big camber or any line loading or ??? going on? whats the passive look like? Those are just way cool. What an exceptional find.

Note: those KEF B110's are not the standard types, these have 24 ohm voice coils, that's why they are paralleled to give an 8 ohm impedence to the crossover. They are the earliest examples of the 5 inch bextrene cone pioneered by the BBC and put into production by KEF and Spendor.

The T27's used in this setup is the original T27 in a plastic case / faceplace, uses a small alnico magnet and has a melinex (mylar) dome, uncolored so it appears whitish.

Looks like all the large caps were electrolytic so will be interesting to see how they sound.

WOW! Those are some speakers! All those great drivers in one box has got to be pretty amazing. Nice Score!:music:

Going to put them back together and do some serious listening, will consider the MI aspect when I have my yearning to.

Yes the cab is one big chamber with some large rectangular cut fabric blocks of something. The passive looks just like the regular B139 woofers- just no magnet on them. This was in the early days of passive radiator use so incorperating one of these must have been something of a shot in the dark!

Yes I got stupid lucky on this find. That was interesting inforamtion to know about the 24 ohm mids and original tweeters- somebody really knows their KEF history!! Certainly not me, this is mt first exposure to the KEF product!

The build on these is nothing less than impressive! While the styling is rather retro the function looks very plausable & well thought out. Quality was the game here. The wiring is routed nice and tight, everything mounted in iron, just a well thought out built for a large heavy cabinet.

The back has these two screw terminals for hook up. I am considering putting in a nice small cup with binding posts on the back. Any thoughts or concensus here? These are probably rare speakers- I want them most functional but want to maintain their (best) originality as well. The xover recap was a functional must, but anything else should be considered I think. Let me know your thinking here.
Thanks DC

IMO I would replace the terminals with binding posts. The tweeters are not original anyways so I don't think anyone would mind the upgrade (significantly better) to the screw connections.

You are likely to not sell these anyways I suspect.

By the way, nice score!

Thanks for the suggestion Sir Byrd- I am leaning to putting in terminal cups as well!
Why do you think the tweeter not to be original? Judging from their mounted posaition looks like they certainly original.
Thanks DC

I thought early in the thread it was determined that they had been modded?
Maybe I'm just going crazy, its a slow morning here in Seattle.
