The best album you EVER heard

sorry for the overlap with a couple of ongoing threads but they got me thinking ...... YMMV, however :

I grew up in the 70's , cut my musical and audio teeth at that time........liked this album then : but LOVE it now :

For me Deep Purple's "Machine Head" embodies the best elements of 70's rock : if I want to demonstrate to someone (usually younger) what rock n roll is/was all about this album has it all:
- classically trained musicians who incorporate a wide variety of styles and influences into what they do : scales and styles from classical to blues
- an absolutely relentless drummer who never lets off, just when you think the drums will fade into the background they come on STRONGER (listen to the intro to "Pictures of Home" )
- a singer who can cover a huge range in terms of scale , style, and emotion
- a legendary guitarist whose style went on to be copied by a generation
- a coincidental seriousness and flippantness about what they are doing
- an album that had a legendary story to go along with it's creation

WHY are these guys not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ?

What turns your crank ?

Machine Head was the first album I can remember hearing, grew up listening and still do listen to those guys almost every day. I find it hard to even list up the top 3 best albums ever, but Machine Head is definately one of them!

Being from a younger generation, I think I would have to choose Nirvana's Nevermind. First purchased on CD when I was 12 (I remember my Dad going with me to the music store and asking an attendant if he could open the case to look at the lyrics.... :sigh: he was politely told to shove off and I was thoroughly embarrassed). Repurchased it once I got into vinyl, and I still spin it regularly. Although I dropped my ORG disc so it needs a good cleaning :tears:.

Bonnie Raitt.....Give It Up

I bought this LP when it first came out around 1971-72.
And it has NOT left the rotation in 40 years!!

BTW: ALL the other pressings are slightly different than the initial LP, as they used a different version of the song, "Stayed Too Long At The Fair".
Too bad, as in my opinion, the original version of the song was far superior.

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Led Zeppelin I
Toss up between those two, take your pick....and that's as of today, my choice a month from now could be completely different.

My favorite album?
It's the one that I am listening to at that given moment.

Really though, my tastes change from day to day.
One day it will be Stephen Stills and Manassas, the next it may be The Band, Music From Big Pink. The next it could be The Rolling Stones, Let It Bleed, or Little Feet, Waiting For Columbus.
It all depends on the mood.
