Look used...I got what I consider to be a GREAT deal on a Bel Canto CD2 here on AK. I mean a GREAT deal! And it's got the coveted Phillips drive mechanism. Really happy with it, feeding my Bel Canto DAC! I love how the Bel Canto VBS-1 power supply can power both my DAC and CD player. Talk about low noise floor!

I too was excited about the Pro-ject. And I had the same price in mind! $400 seems like a good target price for a nice mid-fi player. I guess most people in that price bracket are using DVD players? :dunno:

That's what I was using until I came across my Bel Canto. I'm sort of tempted to sell the Bel Canto at times, because I am much more into vinyl and only have a small CD collection. BUT, I'm sure I might regret it. It's the nicest player I'll ever hope to own.

Anyway, yeah Pro-ject and others, come out with a nice $400 player!

Hahaha....that brings back some good memories. When I was in college during the mid to late 80s, I was a DJ at my university's radio station. Our school radio station was no more powerful than a typical walkie talkie; all of us DJs had to bring in our own records to play (we did have two Technics SL-1200s). Back then, Philips owned PolyGram Records, and Philips offered to "give" us a Philips CD player if we play their latest PolyGram releases on CD. Can you say "PAYOLA"?
 
I've stated this many, many times - I want an effing PHYSICAL copy. Digital downloads, while convenient and lovely sounding (HiRes, talking to you) I don't have the level of satisfaction with a download that I have with an actual cd or record.

I understand that’s why I like vinyls. I tried to switch to CD’s again due to space limitations, just can’t do it.

I'm with you all the way sir. I liken it to the fact that due to modern technology you can make a baby without screwing but where's the fun in that? o_O

For me, having physical media (cd's) that I have to get up and rummage through a pile of to try to find something I want to play, and then have to continually dig through the pile /drawer /cardboard box over and over simple gets old. Having thousands of tracks with a good quality media player is for me the cumulative zenith of a quest I started dreaming about clear back in the early 70's with reel tape and the primitive playlist I recorded on it. I never would want to go back to the days when physical media took up a big portion of a wall..

I feel the same way, while I do have a few digital downloads I just feel there's something missing when playing them. There's a sense of satifaction I get when putting an object in some sort if device to play it. Digital downloads almost feels like I'm taking a shortcut somehow...hard to describe.

No, not a bad thing at all, I suppose I get just as much enjoyment using the equipment as I do listening to it. Pushing a button or two, watching a drawer slide out or working the cueing lever etc. But there are occasions where I enjoy browsing my entire downloaded music library on my iPad. Still feels different though.
