The Coolest Place I've Been To In A While

I decided to take a drive through a nearby town today, and boy was I glad I did. I noticed a jukebox in a window and soon found myself in a real, honest to goodness TV shop! Still in business, and doing pretty well. They fix and sell Zeniths (even have some LGenith stuff on display), and they've got an RC business there too, so there are plenty of radio-controlled airplanes and cars (mostly planes) on top some of the TVs. There's even a display case full of mark. and Avon for the ladies. I'm not quite old enough to remember what these stores were like in the day, but if this is any indication, I think I missed a lot! Any store like this near you?

Around here we have only a couple of places left that do repair work. Used to be quite a few.

But it has become a dying art, because TV's, VCR's and Stereo equipment are a disposable commodity. Cheaper to pitch it and buy new :sigh:

The only one in town that repairs stereo equipment charges a fortune and does a lousy job of it. He has a Sansui TA-30 but wants waaaayy to much for it.

Sad to see the old timers that know their stuff go by the way side... :worried:

The store in town is a Mom & Pop & Son operation. Its been sometime since I needed something fixed but I found they did a real good job & decent prices. From walking by they have pretty much given up on TV sales. I have to think hard to come up with another small shop still going around here. One good sized store in another town is hooked up with Brand Direct after decades with GE & Zenith, so now they carry all sorts of brands. Never visited them. Another place I know has morphed into a video rental/cellphone place that also carries Crosley major appliances. Not sure if they sell new tv sets these days. The other day I visited our town's other repairman. I think he gave up on selling stuff 10-15 years ago at least. There had been a shop in that location since the 50s but he has now moved into his basement. A pretty nice setup there. I have been trying to make contact with all the fellows around before they retire & toss those flybacks & sweep tubes in the dumpster!

Oh, there is a shop in yet another town, it is a combo tv repair shop/bookstore. His wife runs the bookstore & handles the repair counter while her husband is out on calls. Many years ago he gave me a truckload of stuff but I've yet to meet him! We work the same hours...

In my area, over the past six or seven years, we've gone from three repair shops down to one (that I know of!). This remaining one is chock-full of 80's TV sets, and BPC stereo. He's also got a stack of repaired TV sets for sale... apparently the final bills were more than the owners wanted to pay to get an old TV back.
