The Eye

mikeski

I need input
Hi All, I always thought the eye was cool. I saw it mainly used for tuning. But I was considering adding either the eye or eye bar to my amp project as output meters. Like one of the Cary amps I have seen. It would be easier to plan these from the beginning than to add them later. My worry would be installing the bar version and having it look good.

I was wondering if anyone has tried any of these eye kits. These happen to be the Eye Bar. Nice little kits. Maybe someone has a line on an eye version? Or maybe has a design I can copy.

Hmmm,

Second link says 700.00 US .. But those are neat and worth the 10 bucks even as a soldering lesson.

Well, I'm thinking that was a mistake. If not. He will be sitting on those for quite some time to come. ;)

really the price is not so bad on those....i have a radio that uses an em84,it's bright and fine but if i needed a new one.i doubt i could buy just the tube very much cheaper than 15 bucks

tho i don't think the display of these is really quite right or what i would prefer for an audio level display,it would make a fun little whatzit...figure the time it took to put together, whatever time you spend fiddling with or watching it dance...and that's really pretty cheap entertainment for 15 bucks!if you're a novice with a soldering iron and electronic gizmos....you might learn some stuff too...

Apparently, about all the eye tubes had/have short lifespans-1000-2000 hours or so, which WASN'T too big of a deal back around 1949 or so, when every corner drugstore sold tubes...They ARE hard & expensive to find now.

I bet you could make a nifty alignment tool out of one of those boards. The old Dynaco kit FMs used the tuning bar to align by. They claimed this type of alignment was superior to any other for their sets at least.

I have not been inside a Grundig console. But this looks like what they used in a pile of their radios.

And I'm thinking it would be more interesting to install this in the radio section than as a UV meter in an amp.

A few real old maggies used the eyeball, as did a bunch of test equipment. Should be a simple enough job to run it off the speaker outs. I might be scared to put it in the front end of say an integrated because of how it may affect the signal.:scratch2:

In that case, you could just steal a design for a tuning meter.

my 1936 Silvertone SW has a beautiful green tuning eye. Guess its a good thing we only listen to it at christmas

I like the idea of the second one. I was thinking about installing them inside the chassis on the front side on either side of the switch, sideways, with a slot cut to see it through.

And, that is a nice looking amp. And I like that song.
