The final death spiral of Pioneer?

I had a Pioneer head unit in my car for a very long time. It was the nicest car stereo of all that I’ve owned. Nice enough, that when I moved here to PR in the late 90s, I brought it with me for use in a future vehicle. It’s ancient at this point, but in its day it had features that no other brand seemed to be interested in. Most notably, the direct access panel numbers on the front went from 1 to 0 (10) as opposed to competition’s 1 to 6. That made direct inputting a particular radio station a breeze, especially if it was in a fringe area and wouldn’t be picked up during auto-scan. It also allowed for direct selecting a particular track on a cd. It had a remote control too, which was a nice little bonus. Later, here on the island, when I sold my truck and bought a motorcycle, I gave it to my friend who had recently had her car broken into and all her stuff stolen.

I also had a great pioneer car amp that I bought new in the late 80s - a GMH-100. It survived many iterations of my car stereo evolution throughout the 80s and 90s. I gave it to my neighbor’s son when I lived in the mountains a few years ago. To the best of my knowledge, it’s still in use in his car. That was a heavy beast! LOL

As for Yamaha, I’m kinda partial to their stuff because of my experience with their older equipment. Aside from my CR-1020, I’ve got three Yamaha turntables, and a few models of their orthodynamic headphones. Everything Yamaha I’ve had has been a pleasure to own (even though I’ve had to do some minor repairs). That new receiver (S801) linked above in the thread would definitely be on my short list in the event I’m in the market in the future. For consumer grade, I think they make some really nice stuff for the money.
Great unit the 801. Or you can get something a bit more formidable....versatile with Bi amping ability etc.....Not high end but pretty damn nice....

Tlhe Pioneer head unit in my wifes 13 Scion XB actually sounds damn good....far better than I thought it would. It has six Pioneer speakers as well. The Bluetooth is easy to use and pairs quickly and it has a usb port in the center console for mp3 files. And it is HD as well and the Sacramento area has a lot of HD stations. Being double DIN means if we need to replace it, it will be an easy job.

Come to think of it, I had a Pioneer Laserdisc/5 CD player too. I bought it around the same time I bought the rest of my HT setup in the early 90s. That thing was pretty cool, and I'd totally consider getting another if I ever wanted Laserdisc again (don't really see that happening LOL). It was a CLD-M301

The only thing I notice now looking at the pic of it is that I seem to recall that it had its own 1/4" headphone jack and volume control on it down on the bottom left. I know that's the right model number, so maybe I'm misremembering that feature. IDK

When I hear Hong Kong, I'm thinking this move was meant to skirt taxes and business regulations. HK and Singapore have arguably the most free and least regulated business environments in the world right now.

This could be a positive move in other ways. Hong Kong is one of those countries that still have a thriving Hifi market, and lots of mom and pop electronics stores continue to thrive. They have not given into big box retailers and online ordering completely like we have.

You are mistaken. Sony has a line of two channel products under their ES line that are remarkably good and within most enthusiasts budget. I have the HAP Z1ES and the TA-A1ES integrated amplifier, and if I needed speakers they have a beautiful selection of floor standing and two ways that rival all but the most exclusive names.

Yes sir ,I have heard some insanely good Sony ES gear ,can't remember the model but my son briefly had a pair of Sony ES speakers that had excellent bass ,they imaged like crazy and had a massive sound stage ,my son also has some Pioneer Elite amps that look great and perform wonderfully ,I'd like to play around with some of the Sony & Pioneer gear my son brings in & out but I just don't have room for any more systems and gear is piling up again .

How is it possible to get eleven, hundred-and-fifty-watt channels to feed from a 15-amp circuit breaker?
As long as you are under 1,875 watts, you are ok. And rarely are you actually using 150 watts per channel....more like 30 at most

I will always value my 151 Pioneer Kuro 60+ inch Plasma. Even with all its imperfections there is a quality there that is more life like in its presentation. Its more of an analog presentation as opposed to the sterile overly revealing digital presentation of an OLED display. Like the differences between Fuji and Kodak's films. What's film you may ask? We don't have enough space or I enough time to explain. Except to say Fuji is to saturated with color, Kodachrome with its ultimate resolution and skewed colors, and Ektachrome with its grain and slight blue hue are all different. Ansco and Agfa were just strange.
