The Fisher XP-10 speaker recommendations

Hi there. Can anyone recommend speakers for my The Fisher XP-10? I got them an an estate sale and one of them FOR SURE needs new speakers. I haven't cracked open the other, but I'm going to go ahead and assume they also need replaced.

I'll start with replacing the speakers, and if other components needs replaced after that, I'll tackle that next. I did see in another post in this forum that the crossovers will need replaced eventually.

It would be nice if they didn't break the bank. Say, keep them under $200 total?

When you say "FOR SURE needs new speakers" what leads you to be so sure? are you not getting any sound out of it?

Why would you assume the other needs all the components replaced too?

The foam around the parameter of the woofer is gone and pieces of it were in the cabinet. So, I'd like to just replace all the speakers in both boxes so they are all the same type of speaker.

The other speaker is the same age, but sounds OK, so it may not need to be changed, but I want to anyway.

I used to be into speakers when I was young, but I'm really out of the loop now on what is good.

Refoam the speakers thats in it and see how it sounds. That will be a fraction of the cost of new speakers. Plus the Fisher speakers are paired with the crossover already.

The woofers are not original anyway. I probably should have mentioned that. They are Pyle brand. The tweeters and mids do seem to be original. I may just take my chances with the above speakers. I just want to get these fixed and start listening.

Oh I see with regards to the woofers on top of them not being original too boot.

You could always try searching for an original pair on eBay, depending on how much you're willing to spend

Usually you can find the original GEFCO 15" woofers pretty easily on Ebay or elsewhere, right now you could probably get a pair to your door under 100 USD (be careful, I think there may be some that claim to be OEM but aren't. The originals will have alnico magnets). I find the woofers in these to be one of the stronger parts of the speaker. It's an unusual beast now to find a light cone, 2" V.C., 4 ohm 15 inch woofer.

If the midrange works, I'd leave it. Nothing special about it in my opinion, but it's money you don't have to spend. Also, it will be a significant hassle to replace the midrange in these since they're in a separate enclosure, which I believe you'd need to remove the grill to deal with. There are entire forum posts detailing how to remove the front grill which is not an easy or quick task.

Absolutely replace the tweeter, I think most of what gives the original Fisher linup of speakers a bad reputation is how their dome tweeters age. At this point, none of them will have any output due to the degradation of the rubber spider inside. Almost any modern dome tweeter will be an improvement. I think it's possible the originals were 16 ohm, but I doubt an 8 will completely crash the performance of the speaker.

Overall when XP-10s are working right, they sound excellent. They are not efficient, in any respect of the word, but they pair well with most amplifiers over 30 watts.
