Im looking to buy a another set of speakers. I want that ugly duckling look and have narrowed it down to 3.
Any assessments/critiques/praise from someone who has owned them would be appreciated:
-Advent Original Large (fried egg tweeter)
-Dynaco A35
-Dynaco A50

I’ve got A35’s.
Can’t compare them to the others but I think they do a lot right! I recapped the tweeter on mine recently and should have done that a long time ago.
Adding in a subwoofer and I would be quite happy with them, and was until I got my ADS 910’s.
They don’t quite have the high end sparkle that some better speakers have, but it’s not really missed.
They do like tubes.

The crossover in these has an electrolytic capacitor that by now is not great.
For about $4 you can replace it with a film cap and the tweeter will thank you with wonderful sounds.
This is what mine looks like.
You need to pull the woofer out to get access to the crossover.

Sooo, I didnt get any help with anyone comparing these brands/models in this thread, so I pulled the trigger on the ones nearby, and ugliest...lol. I would like to get some Dynacos in the future.
-Advent Original Large = Local(Clearwater, Fl)
-Dynaco A35 = NJ
-Dynaco A50 =W Virginia
And yes, I know the surrounds are inverted. DSC02249.JPG

Nice set of Bullnose OLA's, the "ugly ducking's" were the Utility cabinet version.

I have had OLA's and A-35's and the biggest differences to me were the upper midrange/lower treble where the Dynaco's tweeter was smoother than the Advent's fried egg; bass was comparable, the A35's seemed to go just a tad lower but with slightly less punch. YMMV

All those are solid choices with enough power. Personally someday I want a set of a50s, I have a35s I've loaned out. I had smaller advents and lost them in a divorce but they were nice. All in all, all both sounded plenty good enough with solid state power.

I repair vintage speakers regularly and the Advents would be my choice. They are great sounding speakers.
I received the surrounds from that Cobb guy on the auction site. Theres a shop nearby that charge me $45ea to r&r... How difficult would it be for me to do it myself, AND do it well?

Advent woofers are not that difficult or fussy. Though many consider the Masonite woofers to be more of a PITA they weren't that bad in IMAHO. If you're patient, work carefully and aren't all thumbs you can do it.

I always use alieens tacky glue and a battery to center the voice coil. I usually have speakers laid down flat and playing at low volume within 2 hours. I do not use clamps. I just babysit them. I put the first one under a lamp while finishing the sccond one. Then put the second one under the lamp while installing the first one.

Good luck. After you do a few it gets very easy and relaxing. Less glue is more glue. Have a damp cloth to clean your fingers while working.

IIRC the glue that Cobb includes is the same as/similar to Aileens. When I got surrounds from him it also included a 30hZ frequency cd for centering, though the gap in the Advent woofer is generous enough that they can be done by feel.
