The Future Is Here

If it tastes good and is not worse for you than regular meat, frankly I don't care all that much where it comes from.

Because I'm enough of a sci fi nerd, consider what might happen if we ever establish places to live that aren't on this planet. Not likely we're going to have cows in space, so this sort of thing will quite likely become the way we eat. At least until the replicator from Star Trek becomes a thing.

"At least until the replicator from Star Trek becomes a thing."

But, wouldn't that too, be "synthetic meat" ;)

As to Beyond Meat, 5 years ago the stock was at $175, Today, $0.73.
There are so many interesting things involved there. Some lessons about arrogance of those that are certain they will 'disrupt' the market, going against groups with massive marketing dollars, and many lessons about people's attention spans, group think/opinion and word of mouth in the connected age.

Basicly obesity and processed foods. Eat real food

Yep, people our age can well remember when obesity was VERY rare! In my High School graduating class of a couple hundred students (lived in a somewhat large city), we had exactly 4 excessively overweight fellow students. I'm almost scared to search the obesity rate in today's youth......

OK, so I did, , , I got brave & searched it, and according to the CDC;

Childhood Obesity Facts.

"Approximately 1 in 5 U.S. children and adolescents have obesity"

"supersize me", , , indeed :(

:yikes:

We watch a hotel 'rescue' show from the UK and I'm always amazed what their "Full English Breakfast" includes. I commented to my wife one time, "how are they not more obese than us?" and then instantly realized that nothing there is processed or sugary. That meal will keep them full for hours and their blood sugar won't spike and then crash to make them go "I'm hungry" in a short time.

And its sad, that for many, we have know the root cause for a while.

But hey, processed foods are quick, easy, good and healthy

Yep, back in the 70s and before there would be 1 or 2 kids in a class photo that were 'large'.

They are streaming old Price is Right episodes from the early 70s and it is striking the difference between then and now, the audiences were so thin back then.
They also dressed nicely and didn't act like idiots for the camera and their friends, but I'll save that for a rant on the peeve thread.

I have posted this here before but its fitting.

I took one of our mechanics on a project in Spain, his first time. Second or third day in he says to me "there aren't any fat people here". This was in 2022ish, all the trips run together.

I've told this story before, but here goes.

Visited an AK'er in Vermont several years back, he was giving me boxes of classical records for free. Yeah, a heck of a hump from Ky, but I'd never seen Vermont.

His wife is a serious gardener, and provided a small (toast size) plate of black beans she grew herself, rice, and a small chicken breast from the local farmer's market.

The wife and I ate this quality, tiny meal and were not hungry for 12 hours.

Vitamins and minerals are what the body craves. When it doesn't get it, it tells you to eat more. Couple that with the continual slathering of "taste modifiers" and what some call "excitotoxins" and you have a perfect storm for obesity and disease.

Excitotoxins are substances, primarily food additives like MSG, aspartame, and hydrolyzed protein, that overstimulate neurons to death, causing brain damage, excitotoxicity, and neurological issues
. They work by overloading glutamate receptors, causing excessive calcium influx, leading to cellular dysfunction, memory loss, anxiety, and potential neurodegenerative diseases.

What Are Excitotoxins and How Do They Affect the Body

  • Definition: Excitotoxins are compounds (often additives) that activate neurons to the point of destruction.
  • Mechanism:They hyperactivate NMDA receptors (glutamate receptors), causing an excessive influx of calcium into cells
. This causes the cells to die (apoptosis)
    .
    • Common Sources: Monosodium glutamate (MSG), aspartame (NutraSweet), cysteine, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and natural flavoring.
    • Impact: They are linked to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Symptoms of Excitotoxicity (Glutamate Overload)
Symptoms often relate to nervous system dysfunction due to cell damage:

  • Neurological: Agitation, anxiety, panic attacks, depression.
  • Cognitive/Physical: Memory loss, sleeplessness, low energy.
  • Other: Fatigue and pain, often associated with disorders like fibromyalgia.
Key Aspects of Excitotoxicity

  • Cellular Excitotoxicity: A process where excessive extracellular glutamate triggers a massive calcium influx, causing neuronal cell death.
  • Vulnerability: The immature nervous system (infants) is highly sensitive to these toxins. Elderly consumers are also more vulnerable.
  • Management: Reducing intake of processed foods containing added monosodium glutamate (MSG) or aspartame is recommended to avoid symptoms.

First, I must say I respect Mike Tyson for doing that commercial. I watched maybe 10 minutes of the SB, and did not see this.

But, don't discount cows in space.

If pigs can do it, why not cows?

Oh man, I literally mentioned that to the wife just yesterday. She didn't remember it, not much of a Jim Henson fan as I am, but yeah, I hear that in the big boy voice.

PIGS.......IN......SPAAAAAACE!

Hmmm - we had a nice lunch today - miso soup, followed by a tray of rice, ginger, wasabi, and fish bits ...
I'm not a fan of wasabi so I stick to the ginger and soy sauce ...
dead fish is more humane than dead pigs, cows etc (tho I do love an occasional great steak)
