I bought my first beta hifi vcr in the mid nineties, a used Sony SL-HF900 because a friend of mine in the business said it recorded audio better than any cassette deck. I bought it for that reason and because I could playback for hours without touching the deck. I still have that unit and a parts unit as a backup. It was really handy in those days as I was newly single and liked it for the extended makeout sessions. I also like it because copy protection doesn't work on it, because they don't have the circuitry to support it. My kids got to watch many Disney movies that I borrowed from the public library on lasor disk and recorded to beta.
