the lowdown please- the SME 3009 "improved"...

I've had that arm for 31 yrs, love it!! Had great luck with Grace, Ortofon, Grado, Shure V15 IV HE on there now, ebay UK great source for parts, weights etc, don't know of any issues other than heavy carts need more weight in the back, I don't know who said it but I would never glue/tape any coin to this arm/headshell, defeats the purpose of having a nice arms mass:thumbsdn:
Peace Craig

Good to hear and what I suspected with my short experience with this arm. :thmbsp:

You mentioned that your arm didn't come with an SME headshell. They are available online, albeit at "interesting" prices. This one was at $102 when I last looked at it! =8/

Hi thedelihaus,

The SME 3009 Improved is a lower mass version of the SME 3009. It was designed for the Shure V 15 Type II and II Improved and the ADC XLM series cartridges in the day. The Audio-Technica 440MLa is a superb match for this arm. It's an excellent performer. Ingrid and I have several of the 3009 Improved arms in daily service. You'll like this combo. The tonearm bearings were the main improvement, they are lower friction.

Well, I'm going to talk with the seller and figure out what to do. My concern is, after sourcing the missing parts, the table and arm will have cost me more than if I bought 'em off audiogon or ebay separately, or even paired. He's a great guy, and a friend, and won't steer me wrong, so we'll see where this ends up.

My goal is to try the table out, and if it doesn't work, break even with a resale.

Kent, just got a riding lawnmower, equipped for me to be able to operate.

Maybe I'll pull a "Straight" and come out and visit you!

"...Alvin Straight (1920–1996) was a resident of Laurens, Iowa. He gained fame for traveling 240 miles on a 1966 John Deere lawn mower to visit his 80-year-old ill brother in Mount Zion, Wisconsin. His brother had recently had a stroke. At a top speed of five miles per hour, the journey took six weeks. The trip took place in the summer of 1994 when Alvin was 73 years old.
Straight's story was adapted into the film The Straight Story, directed by David Lynch, which starred Richard Farnsworth (in an Oscar nominated role) as Alvin Straight..."

Great link!

Knew there was a 3009, 3009 improved, and a 3012...didn't know there were as many variations on them as there are.

Only 3009 I ever researched was the improved w 6.5 effective mass.

I'm learning somethin', thanks,
Chas
