The Marantz Bug

I had some intentions of reducing my audio investment. I sold off some more expensive gear and purchased a Marantz 2230.

Well, I have since purchased a Marantz 2245.

I am powering a very small area through efficient speakers. I looked at the 2270, but I didn't need the power. The 2245 seemed to offer a lot of the same build quality without as premium a price.

What are listening cues that I should look for between the 2230 and 2245? I will most likely keep both.

My 2230 has been professionally restored.

I may sit on my 2245 for a little bit (I have to to save up money for any rebuild), though I do have the ability to speed things up.

The 2245 is one of the best sounding Marantz receivers. Get it updated and you will agree.

But you can't go wrong with a 2230 either and that lovely cap coupled sound.

These are two of my favorites with the 2245 tipping the scale slightly over the 2230. I bought both models new in the early 70's. Sound is subjective, but I would say the 2230 is slightly warmer sounding with the cap couple design. The 2245 is simply in my sweet spot for warmth while still having a clean sound -- Enough power for most speakers and a beautiful work of art to boot. Get that thing restored. It's a gem.

With the original box, I am lucky. If I can't afford to have it serviced right now, I will squirrel it in a closet until I can.
