The Moment When It All Comes Together - What's your ingredients???

It all comes together almost every good recording I play
I find it most often boils down to the quality of the recording. A good recording is a good recording, dammit! Even on my budget system*, set up in a near-field configuration with AMHD streaming, I am often blown away. But, I am a lover of music, first and foremost.

*AMHD > ChromecastAudio > miniDSP 2x4HD > FX Audio TUBE-01 > Crown XLi 800 > (2) Polk S20 > (2) Pioneer SW-8MK2.

The moment it came together for me was after some upgrades. When listening I was flipping between being totally immersed in the music - not hearing the equipment, to reflecting on how amazingly great the stereo sounded, beyond what I expected I'd achieve (and then I'd become immersed in the music again). Now the novelty of the new amazing sound has worn off, and I just get lost in the music - every time.

Heh ... life if funny. Weather is a perfect 74 here in Dallas. Humidity is low and pressure is perfect. Music is good, dialed in until my smile widened from corner to corner. Everything coming together just great. Then .... something's amiss. Changed album, and somthings ..... scratchy. Lift the tone arm off the platter and hear scratchy feedback from the tone arm. Remove the cartridge and inspect, notice red wire is frayed, then, moving it, it broke off. No problem, I have another set. Place the cover over the needle on my Ortofon 2M red, and turn left to sit down. New Tennis shoes on a new rug, my left foot doesn't move, I start to trip ... but catch myself ... hackie sacking that cartridge where the cover comes off (apparently, I didn't push it hard enough to make sure it clipped in properly), then the cartridge falls to the carpet. Alls well, and I reach down to pick up the cartridge that just so happen to have landed needle side down, .... not thinking, picked it up .... But the needle snagged in the carpet. I can't be mad at myself. I've pissed away more money on fishing tackle, but DAYUM I ain't got 4 hours on this yet.

My heart sank when you said it fell needle down, cause I know that tune. So sorry, man. Might send off to needlestein, aka cartridge_retipper on that auction site (zero affiliation, but happy customer).

Some great stories here, and thank you for each one, everybody. Isn't it wonderful when you hear texture in your music?

Thanks James, it truly was a really beautiful day when everything just seemed to come together. I live for those days. We've all had those days when it just didn't matter what we do, music just wasn't going to happen. I've read many threads here discussing those times. It's been a joy to read others story's here where it all seems to come together. Seems to me people can reason why that happens more so then when it doesn't come together. In my case, it all came to a screeching halt. I just received my replacement via Amazon and I'm back in business.

Thank you for the advice on needlestein. I did look, and I can't tell you if it was him, but it seems to me now that the price for retipping was more then the replacement. I admit I gave very little effort into investigating the service, I just came to the conclusion that since the cantilever is broke, that it made more sense to me to just buy a replacement. As I said, all is well now, with some lessons learned.

Kool and the Gang, man. Might even ask him via that auction site's messaging if he has something a bit higher up the chain, but if you're cool with the sound, slap a replacement on there and get back in the race. Usually, his retipping is significantly cheaper, but your situation might be different. Best of luck!!

I really don't think what system you have or what speakers you have matters when you have that moment. I lived for 7 or 8 years in hell with a neighbor who would call the cops on me no matter what volume I had it on. 23 times the first year I lived there.when I finally got out of there I picked up a jvc system at gw set it up threw boston's first album on which I probably hadn't played since i bought it back in the 70s and cranked it up. suddenly my knees buckled my eyes swelled with tears and I was transported back in time when I was behind the wheel of my first car, a 1972 dodge charger one hand on the wheel the other arm around the one that got away (don't tell the wife, LOL) stereo cranked, windows down haulin ass down the back roads of the pinelands with no place to be. yea good times

Yep ... said this very same thing myself. No better medium to transport you to another time and place. Good on you , you got to experiance this. And welcome to AK :beerchug:

Some days my system sounds like crap to me, some days it sounds good, and some days it takes me to heaven. The variable is where my head's at I guess.

Welcome to AK:thumbsup:

Thanks Spiceman, Love being here! I too caught the stereo fever and now have a shed full of receivers, turntables and speakers but I'm at an age and so full of different heart meds that I often forget why I stepped into another room but yet sometimes I'll hear a song that just triggers those warm memories and it doesn't seem to matter what the brand of stereo is or its specs or my speaker placement it just sounds great.

Sorry to hear about the health issues. I'm 66 and been blessed with good health so far. But I sometimes find listening to older music is a double edge sword. I'll get to remember old times and wish I could do it all again. Doesn't happen much, but every now and again, it'll catch me.

Hah ... stepping in another room and forgetting, pfft ... I got 2 boys in their mid 30's that do that. We ALL do. It's more that if you step in that room and dont recognize it that's cause for concern. So glad your in a time and place where you can enjoy this part in our life.

Just turned 57 last week, had my first heart attack when I was 45 almost didnt make it thru my second one but Im ok cant do much but listen to music which is ok by me. I know what your saying about a double edge sword. I had an older sister and when I was just a kid in the early 70s she had a kenwood system that she would crank up the newest zeppelin or bowie albums on and man it was heaven. I lost her near 20 years ago and there are a few zep songs I cant get thru with out shedding a tear.

I completely get it signal76. I had 3 strokes a couple weeks before my 53rd birthday and am lucky to still be here (sometimes I don't know). I had a good buddy who when we were younger would go out in the bushes and beat the hell out of his F-250 4x4 for a while, then park it,crack open the beers, spark up a fatty or 2 and listen to tunes on his Craig Powerplay 8-track (that I sold him), good times and much fun. Found out through another old buddy that he died of stomach cancer a couple years back so now I have trouble listening to Supertramps, Crime of the Century album because it was a fave back then.
