The New Dylan...

...is wonderful.

It's a "Tell Tale Signs" for the early 70s stuff, makes you hear the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era with fresh ears. I'm not sure how I feel about the Isle of Wight concert yet, but it's good to have it cleaned up and officially released. In any event, the two cd set has my highest recommendation, even if you're not a Dylan completist.

Trust the weather up north is fine. Been a long 18 months or so, and I haven't been as frequent a visitor here. Me? A lot of Ellington, Armstrong, Tatum, early Coltrane, Tony Bennett. It seems the older I get, the more conservative my tastes are.

I missed this release, not to mention this thread, but I picked this up last week.
I like it. SP is hit/miss for me(like many, I guess), but I'm a new convert to New Morning. And I've always enjoyed NS. This is a nice set for this era. I'm a bit biased, though. The Bootleg Series are an instant buy for me.

We may as well use this thread to drag up some controversy. I love me some Dylan, but in the last few months I had seen some really troublesome items - all signalling that Dylan has borrowed more than he has originated.

Firstly, and I highly suggest the documentary that his daughter did, Ramblin' Jack Elliott came into my periphery. There was a time where Dylan was almost outright copying his style. However this was in his very early days, so I don't particularly fault him.

Next I was listening to a CBC interview with Joni Mitchell and the subject of her on Dylan came up. She spoke about a Japanese writer from whom Dylan has taken his themes and lyrics for a recent album. I guess even his paintings are being accused of plagarism.

So all of that said, I have enjoyed his more recent offerings - most of which I feel have been overlooked by serious music fans. I have enjoyed them but everytime I go to spin some Dylan, I have this "feeling". I don't want it to be true, but maybe he isn't who we thought he is.

Of course, some say he is a conceptual artist who needs inspiration to create.

I think it was Love and Theft that had the Japanese plagiarism issues. And he took credit for some pretty well known tunes on Modern Times.
I recall an interview where he brushed it off as just "inspiration", and I agree to a point. I wish he would just give credit where it is due. I mean, I love that he tore Rollin' and Tumblin' a new one, and High Water is great. But instead of putting "(For Charley Patton)" after High Water, why not just give a proper credit? It makes him look like a 5th member of Zeppelin.

I still enjoy listening to it, though.

I agree, it's annoying that no credit is given. Another good example of inspiration is how Bowie and Keef would write. Tina Turner noted it in her book. They would play obscure soul and R&B 45s, then mess around with the songs and begin changing things and from this , create a song.
