Lot of work Louie, many thanks are in order. I'm not looking to start a fight, just curious why we put up with this? I mean this seems to be a fairly common Grado issue. There's plenty of other cartridges out there that aren't prone to humming. Why doesn't the market dismiss them as flawed and just move on? In otherwords - I know they're highly regarded, but what makes them so good that we are so forgiving?

I don't know the answer to that one. I think that it was my hope when I started this thing a few years ago to provide the information to Grado in hopes that they could do something with it.

That, and when mounted on a turntable that won't cause the Grado to hum, they really do sound nice. I have a black that I've had on a Pioneer PL-550, 570, 55DX and a Technics SL-1401 at one time or another and it's a nice cartridge. Are there ones I like better? Yes. But the black is entry level. I always did want to give a Silver or Gold a few spins.

I don't know that 'flawed' is the right word. I see where you're coming from, but I wouldn't regard it as flawed much more than any cartridge/tonearm/turntable mismatch would be 'flawed'.

It would be nice, however, going into a purchase to know what the track record of a particular table/cart combination is, and that's where this comes in. :D

I agree that's not the right word or necessarily the case. My curiosity is piqued that that's not the general perception. I heard a modified wood-bodied Grado back in '76 and it was inspiring. I think it was a Paramecium. Someday I'd like to have a wooden Grado.

You're not stupid. :D Google's version of excel takes some learning, as I'm finding out also.

The sheet was out of rows. I added some more. I also 'froze' the first row so that the headings won't scroll or sort. Your data has been added. :D
 
Somebody deleted the entry I added last week for my Technics SL-M3 with a Grado p-mount Silver. I just readded it to the list.

Please don't do that.

You're not alone, just checked and the 3 entries I made last week: Goldring GR1.2, Technics SL-1210mkII and SL-1700mkII are gone too. :sigh:

Sansui, can the spreadsheet be set so posters can only make additions? :scratch2:
 
good job, Louie. Interesting to note that, in some cases, the same turntable apparently has hum in some cases, none in others. I suspect that what, at times, gets attributed to 'Grado hum' might simply be a matter of setup, headshell wires or other factors which don't directly relate to the cartridge.
In my case(PL-41, with Red), I noticed that, when the headshell wires were intertwined, I would get a noticable hum, and when separated, it disappeared.
Just my two cents on the matter. Good effort, again!!
 
Posters CAN make additions, but if someone screws up the database, then I have to restore from a backup. Anything entered since the previous time I made a backup is lost. That's where your posts from last week went.

I'd like to think that I could back it up every day, but that's not going to happen without a salary. :D
 
UPDATE: On suggestion from the Admin team and to help preserve the integrity of the database, I've locked down the 'everyone can edit' aspect of the spreadsheet. It's open to viewing but not open to editing.

To add another entry, just PM Hakaplan (Howard) with the following info:

Turntable mfg:
Turntable model
Cartridge model
Hum? Yes or No.

Bah....I'm still pondering. Should I buy a Gold since someone with an Ariston rd-40 said it hummed, different cartridge on the database, but still a grado. Screw it and go back to an Ortofon blue like I had originally wanted, or #3 get a Audio Technica AT440mla since they work good too.

Pulled the triggger and went with the Gold. She don't hum. :music: All is good in my little world again.

PS: the %#@*ing thing cost me $280 CDN after taxs. :o We need a poker face smiley.
 
Hi!

Have a new one Pro-Ject RPM 6.1 SB. First I tested the turntable with Sumiko Pearl, then with Ortofon 2M Blue and last Grado Gold.

So I can say:

Pro-Ject RPM 6.1 SB with Grado Gold will hum.

No hum with Ortofon 2M Blue, Sumiko Pearl

Excellent list. I was just wondering - Rega P2 is entered three times as follows :
Rega P2 Gold No (hum)
Rega P2 (glass platter) Gold No (hum)
Rega P2 Gold Yes (hum)
Is this a mistake? (I am not criticizing :smlove:)
