My single worst loss was my own damn fault. It was a sale, actually, not a purchase. I sold a very nice 1/2" RTR on ebay. The guy asked me if I would do COD. Well, this was several years back, the first year I even used Ebay and I foolishly said OK. The final price was $600 and some change. I know for sure that I requested it be sent COD through the post office. For some reason, the carrier dropped it on the guy's porch as if it were a normal delivery. I wasn't getting any info from anybody, the Post Office or the buyer, so I asked the buyer if he received the tape deck and told me he just got it, no COD. He agreed to just send the money, but that he had "issues.." According to him the heads were more worn than I described 
bs, he thought it was only worth $300! I said no, send the deck back. he didn't want to and in the end, just kept it and his $300. I filed a complaint with the USPS, they said, since the other party was unwilling and basically denying everything, once it was delivered, it would be hard to do anything about it. I filed a complaint with ebay and I don't actually know what the status was in the end. So, I was just screwed.

I must say ponderbear's story is the hardest. Cold hard cash & gear gone. Kind of like the german ripoff I experienced.
