The Quest for The KEF… Reference 107!

Those input cables look like old Adcom cables, circa 1990. If so, be careful; they're so old they can physically separate and take out what they are connected to....

Yeah, I hooked up the Kube on the fly, and now I'm tearing everything down. The Kube will go to a local electronics shop to have them check it out and make sure it's working properly.

You've got a good point and I will get some decent interconnects once I have the speakers back in the lineup.

Hey, does anyone have a full on schematic for the Kube?

Replacing the old caps with better ones would be a good thing, theoretically and practically but require a bit of work reconfiguring the bigger caps onto the board. Lots O' Work.

Have you tried asking on the Hifiloudspeaker forum about a schematic for your 107 Kube?

Some of the designers who worked at Kef in those days hang out there.

Although both Enrico Cecconi and David Smith lurk at www.hifiloudspeakers.info I'm afraid the designers and builders of professional KEF Kubes, KMI, Maidstone, etc have no more information.
All that they have is already published here http://www.hifiloudspeakers.info/Anatomy/KEFDocuments/DocumentsIndex.html

Another former KEF engineer lurks at www.diyaudio.com who tends to have views on Kubes might have a few more titbits.

Technically minded individuals should familiarise themselves with Friend circuits used in Kubes.

Free at last... thank god they are Free at last!

I had to use a phillips head driver to hold one of the mounting screws for the speaker. Seems some aren't glued in to the plennum too well and they may rotate on you when you try to remove the nylock nuts. Look at the back side of the mounting plennum and you hopefully can make out a phillips head to lock onto while you remove the nut. This required two people and I was real lucky to get it off!

Time to pack 'em up for shipment to OC!

Uhmmm... anyone know if the "grommets" for the speaker mounting are still available anywhere? I guess I could use o-rings, but the grommets would be nice.

Shown below is only one half of the grommet. These go through on both sides of the mounting hole and "suspend" the speaker.

Search DigiKey for split bushings. They do come in flexible material like PVC and plastic. Take measurements of the OD, ID, and height you need and cross reference. Here's an example:

Nice set of speakers. Know how you feel. Went through similar steps with a pair of 105.1

BTW, may I ask for the dimensions (external) of the bass cabinets?

TIA

Hey SimplySound,

That is one great KEF story mate, I had to read it with my morning coffee at work today. Made me feel like what Sasi said before, like going through with my 105.1's ...

At least you heard approximatelly how your kefs sound... I am still not even close to put the drivers into enclosures, but it is slowly coming to an end.

I think you have an awsome set of speakers there. light sand and some tung oil... they will look even more amazing :)))

Take care mate.

No, not EVEN close to what you are going through. My trials and trivulations are, well, trivial compared to what you have done! I salute you sir for resurrecting your 105's from the true neglect they recieved in the back of some bar!

And don't you worry, those 105's are basically a lighter bass-ed 107 and you will absolutely be amazed at the sonic beauty that will come forth from those when you are done!

And remember the mantra... Keep the KEF's alive! :thmbsp:

Look forward to the rest of your post Rotary!

Hi SaSi... Just the cabinet is 13"WX17.5"DX31"H

Thanks,
I'm wanting to rebuild a pair of those. So far, I have the heads in full working order, the drivers and the crossovers. The bass cabinets are gone. A guy had stored these in a basement and it flooded, ruined the bases of the bass cabinets and the guy disassembled the bass cabinets and threw them away...

With the external dimensions I can establish the inner volumes of the two sub-enclosures plus shared front enclosure and rebuild them.

BTW, the guy who stored them in the flooded basement had "upgraded" them with a 5.1 system made of plastic.

SaSi, I will try to get you some dimensions from the inside of the Cabinet while I have them pulled apart. That should help you ALOT!

And too funny about that guy... I'm building my 5.1 system AROUND these awesome units and this guy didn't even realize the x.1 part of it was right there in that cabinet!

I think after they got water damaged he just didn't know what to do and figured the speakers were shot. It is a testament to you and Rotary that with the right aptitude and motivation, nothing is beyond repair!

Good job guys!

Thanks for taking the time to take the internal measurements. I was planning to extract them from schetches but there's nothing like the exact measurements taken...

It's funny how I also have a 5.1 system using similar units.
Front left/right a pair of 105.1
Surround left/right a pair of 104ab
center a diy version of the r101, soon to be replaced by an mtm unit using a pair of B110 and a T52 - to have the same tweeter in the LRC array.

To complete the collection, my livingroom system is utilizing a pair of Calindas, the home office system a pair of Carlton III and a second TV system is using another pair of DIY 101s. Too weak for mini home cinema needs, my plan is to rebuild the 107s for the living room and move the Calindas to the TV and the 101s to the office. Then use the Carltons to aim to convert the listening room system from 5.1 to 7.1

Incidentally, I don't actually have a 5.1 system. I feed the LF channel to the 105s who serve just right. At times I can feel the leather couch vibrate!

Uhmm, now you have me thinking... I don't output my SB (Sub-Bass or LF) to anything at this point. I wonder how I can add that into my mains?
