Two major disappointments of this otherwise fine soundboard are the total butchering of tracks 1 and 2 of the second set, which are Fancy Colours from Chicago II and the Elegy Suite from Chicago III. After hunting for a complete version of the show for many years, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
Fancy Colours is a combination edit, which I made in Audacity. Most of the slow introduction was missing in the original posting. After auditioning other live performances of the same song, I chose the BUDOKAN, Japan performance from 1972. Gently editing off Lamm's free form organ intro from the Budokan very fine audience recording, I eased into the sustained organ note that begins the actual song. I used this Budokan introduction until a digital glitch decimated Cetera's lyric near the end of the slow section. Fortunately, the original Nacogdoches track picks up just before the glitch of the Budokan track, which enabled a near-seamless edit. The Budokan track does have a prominent hi-hat rhythm that is buried in the Nacogdoches mix, revealing the edit to the discerning listener, but I felt that the presence of the complete track was more important to the enjoyment of the whole show than the slight tonal shift of the edit point.
Elegy Suite is also a combination edit, which I again made in Audacity. The bulk of the suite is from the Nacogdoches TX show of 1971, including the ending. The missing sections were the improvised solos, and I edited those out of the STOCKHOLM, Sweden show of 1971, fitting them into the Nacogdoches performance. The Stockholm show, while ostensibly a soundboard, was captured with an auto-leveling recorder, which added much noise in quiet sections to its version of the suite. However, the sound quality, being continuous in the improvised solo sections, is rather good, and the edit fit very well into the Nacogdoches performance. The return to the ending section of the Nacogdoches track is also a near-seamless edit, with a tonal shift in the drums revealing the edit to the discerning listener, but, again, I felt that the presence of the entire track was more important to the enjoyment of the whole show than the tonal shift at the second edit point.
As it is unlikely that that the show would end with Loneliness Is Just a Word, the show is undoubtedly incomplete, but this seems to be all there is.
