The Sansui Awesome Foursome Review 2020.


List on contenders;

Sansui AU-111 (1966) vs AU-1111 MOS Vintage (1989) vs Alpha 907 Limited (1994) vs Alpha 907 NRA (1998). Might add another contender or two in the mix. I'd love a restored AU-X1 into the mix that way we have pretty much one from each decade.


Thinking of a small gtg here in Oz for passionate Sansui nutters only which they can vote and decide whats their favourite.

It could be some time before this actually happens but stay tuned. Looking in August or September depending on the Cov19 situation.

What are your thoughts or opinions on what will sound the best to you.
What design do you prefer internally or externally with built quality

There is an excellent thread on stereo.net that gives listening impressions on many of the Alpha series. It would be amazing to have something similar comparing different generations like you have proposed. I agree though it would be great to have an Au-X1 or Au-X11 in the mix to round everything out. Please please please make this happen!

Yes, I've seen this on Stereo.net but it hasn't got the AU-111, AU-X1 & the "King" AU-1111 Mos Vintage with the rest of his list. I'm planning to purchase either an X1 or X11 to hopefully add to that list of contenders.

Anyone know of one for sale?

If I wasn’t on the other side of the planet I would happily donate my X11 in the name of science. Im very interested to hear anything about the AU 1111 Mos Vintage as I’ve been thinking about importing one to try but I’m not sure how much different it would be from the X11....hence the importance of your test!!!

Once my speakers are completed, I'll get this review underway.

Temporary added SB Acoustics super tweeters and once all the test & measurements / listening sessions have been set in stone and I'm happy with how they sound, these will be dismantled for a refit then hopefully do some serious listening with the Sansui's. They sound unbelievable.

No. I bought these Diy's from my ex school teacher where I did one of his loud speaker courses. I did a pink noise sweep and the tweeter starts to rolls off at 12KHz and that's why I'm adding those super tweeters. I'll be remaking the crossovers, repaint the cabinets adding outriggers etc. I want to get this all done and set as a reference standard before doing the Sansui reviews.

How to do a “pink noise” sweep? Im not new to Sansui, but I have never pursued the higher end of hifi in a true sense.
