The shortest distance between two points - UPS method:

I sent a package (via UPS) from Washington, DC to Cincinnati, OH – a distance of ~524 miles

UPS Tracking:
  • Washington, DC to Richmond, VA – 109 miles
  • Richmond, VA to Lexington, KY – 491 miles (and now only 82 miles from Cincinnati, OH)
  • Lexington, KY to Richmond, VA – 491 miles
  • Richmond, VA to Knoxville, TN – 436 miles (and now only 251 miles from Cincinnati, OH)
  • Knoxville, TN to Lexington, KY – 170 miles (and now only 82 miles from Cincinnati, OH)
  • Lexington, KY to Cincinnati, OH – 82 miles
Total miles: 1779

lol... funny stuff.

I remember buying an amp from a seller in Canada and watch terrified as it criss-crossed the country.

Actually shortest in not cheapest. As UPS would have to have sorting and routing at every depot and then would only be able to actually ship when they had a full load.

this way everything goes to the main hub and then is sent out to regional hubs and then finally to the actual depot where it is put on the truck that brings it to your home.

But, to go from Richmond to Lexington, only to return to Richmond, and then go to Knoxville, only to get back to Lexington, seems a bit unusual, eh?

I always knew there was a reason that I've had more shipping issues with UPS. Now I know why....they give themselves extra opportunities to handle (ie. drop/damage/destroy) your package.

Had the same results with a turntable. It crossed the continent almost three times, delivery took a month, and it showed up looking like a truck ran over it.

And Opps gave me precisely...nothing for the damages.

But almost every other time I've had no complaints with their service.

Yes, there was a good reason for it to hit Lexington twice. The computerized shipping decision algorithms UPS uses dictate when and where packages ship. With the model UPS uses, every package not scheduled for delivery at that facility should be in a truck "en route" by COB. Their opportunity storage cost on vehicles is lower than their square foot storage cost in a building, strange as it seems - even with labor load/offload time figured in.

The old Northwest Corner Method for shipping calculations utilizing multiple sites, multiple packages, and multiple transports ensures that the shortest route will never be used - but it does ensure the carrier incurs the lowest possible cost structure to achieve profit.

I have seen other models in use, like the UShipit, and they will provide direct door to door service. They will also offer $120 to ship a Marantz 2230 from Boston to St. Louis.
