I had an eight track deck in my '69 Plymouth, think I got it at "Muntz" stereo. Used to party out by the railroad tracks at the east end of Van Buren(?) out by where Legend City used to be.

Wow, by the time I got to the party age, we were onto cass. decks...

And to be honest that was the real intro into high end audio.... and the rest is history... I would post my story, but its pretty boring..lol

Boring is fine, as long as you remain relevant

thanks stabby, how about your stereostory?

It's mostly about music, the gear fetish is only a few years old for me.

We used to race Hot Wheels cars in third grade for pink slips. I tweaked my cars with my mom's sewing machine oil on the axels/wheels.

I never lost.

So I ended up with a huge collection of Hot Wheels. After just a few weeks, no one wants to race me, so I traded them to a kid for a bunch of 45 rpm records. Beatles, lots of popular crap, but I got hooked.

Then I dig into my dad's stuff. Mostly dad music, but there were some rock albums mixed in. More hooked.

By the time I was 12, freeform FM radio was in full bloom, and the DJ's were playing some awesome stuff you never heard on AM. Hooked.

Christmas lists were just lists of records. I got a Panasonic Quad receiver with some saved up allowance money. It was BOTL, I'm sure, but to me it sounded like heaven. Then some TT I don't recall the brand.

Teens through my 20's I played in lots of garage bands, most fun ever. Music was my life. Until I had to get a real job, anyway.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and I realize I'm not listening that much anymore. I have hundreds of CD's, but I get tired listening to them.

You've all heard that before.

Then I inherited a few hundred LPs, having long ago sold my collection. They sat in the garage for two years. One day I happened to spot them and I thought, why don't I listen to music 24/7 like I used to?

I remember sitting around with 10 or 15 friends, drinking beer, smoking some gnarly bud, and just listening to music. When someone got some new LPs it was an EVENT!

I started thinking about those great big stereos everyone had back in the day. Maybe my gear was the problem?

And I got curious about those LPs. Bought an AT PL120, some JBLs, then an old Pioneer TT, an AT 440mla, then old Kenwood receiver, then some Klipsch Kg4s. Every upgrade made the sound better.

That led to a few web searches for tips/tricks/gear reviews, most of which kept bringing me here.

My gear upgrades are on hold until after an upcoming across town move, but I can't wait for the next TT or receiver. Meantime I'm playing records for hours, pissing off the wife and neighbors and enjoying music again just like when I was a kid.

Well, not just like, I did trade the beer and gnarly bud for scotch and fine cigars. :D

mutz gear! wow.
no mindcrime, do tell!

SR, I will pst it up tomorrow... there are a few interesting moments in there..lol Like the time my uncle gave me his receiver to fix, I told him I didn't know anything about that old junk, so he said toss it... and I did!

stabby, what part of town are you heading to?

great story stabby! ive had some of those old quad panasonic deals over the years, they are really well built, and dont sound awful. the kenwood was indeed a big upgrade, whats the model? and can you post some pics?
i know how you feel about waiting for the next receiver! the thrill of the hunt is a big factor with me too! i love going to bed every night wondering what im gunna find next!

Hey Mindcrime, we're heading for Ahwatukee most likely, but it's not set in stone. We're still looking.

I love the weather in AZ, especially this time of year, but I'm also trying to talk the wife into Hawaii with no luck.

Hey Stereorob, it's a KR-7050. Not much posted about it, but it's 80 watts and sounds awesome to me. A lot better than my late 90's BPC Kenwood. It's missing the high filter button and the phono pre is having issues, I'm using a Cambridge Audio 640 for now. Much different sound than the Kenwood pre. Debating a repair, or may just wait for the right model at the GW or CL and keep the Kenny as a backup.

I have to admit to some envy when I see that wall of silver you have!

hmm, the kr-7050 is a good one! get a button for it and see if you can get the phono stage to clear up. as for the 90s bpc model, take it into the back yard, hang it from a tree by the cord, and take a metal baseball bat to it. :D
if the repair on the 7050 isnt too much, id go for it! and thanks for the envy of my great wall of hi-fi, it took alot of time to get it all!

Do you still have the Fisher?

Do you still have the Fisher?

i have many fishers, witch one? the 220t, 440t, 500b, or the one from the 80s, bpc,? the bpc one was saved by a bpc sympithiser, my buddy billy.
if he had not come to its rescue, it would be in the palm beach county dump in about 50 peices by now. lol

Dad had a bunch of records...One day he learned to put them 5 feet from our heads...certainly wasnt high enough!

YEAH FRISBEES!
All it took was haphazard stacking of furniture, and we're there!

I was under ten years old. a few years later i played some that were left. But remember none of the songs. But alot of older country. the rest 20 yrs later is history.

Music brought me to this hobby.

"Music was my first love, and it will be my last, music of the future, music of the past. To live without my music would be impossible to do, cause in this world of trouble my music pulls me through." True words in a slushy song.

When my 80s hifi stuff broke six years ago I went to the hifi stores and saw all that crappy ugly plastic stuff. So I turned to Ebay and started with a Marantz 1072, a Bang&Olufsen turntable Beogram 2202 and Bang&Olufsen Beovox S 60 speakers.

Very soon my interest for vintage hifi turned into addiction, no problem to confess that.

In five years I purchased some 150 receivers, amps, equalizers, CD players and turntables and 18 pairs of speakers. I am not rich and so I had to sell 90% of my big private library to get money for my addiction.

One day I realized that something went wrong and I strictly stopped buying gear. I even began to minimize the collection. Now I still heave some sixty fine audio pieces and 13 pairs of speakers. It is still too much I think but for this moment it is okay.
