The tuner in my Carver 900 receiver blows away my separates!

I picked up a Carver 900 for $56 a GW a few weeks ago. I swapped it into my bedroom system, which replaced an Arcam integrated amp and the extremely highly regarded Akai AT-93B. http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/reviewsA-C.html#akai

Anyway, we have an 18 watt publicly supported station here that barely comes in on the Akai or my vintage Kenwood KT-615, or my Sherwood Newcastle AVP-9800 or any of my Mitsubishis. With the Carver and the Asymmetrical Charge-Coupled Detector button engaged, it comes in clear as a bell. I am astounded. This is the best radio station in town, and I haven't been able to listen to it since I moved last year. This is an amazing device and I wonder why nobody else uses it.

Great stuff! Those Carver tuners were pretty great. I ran a TX-11A for a while and was always impressed with what it could do with low-powered, hard to receive stations.

And tunerifo pans it. I don't get it. They're not as harsh on the 11b, but still, that ACCD is insanely effective, why no respect? I'm also listening to a classical station from 40 miles out in stereo for the first time.
 
I used to own a 11b many years ago. The reason I no longer own it is because over the years as I purchased more and more tuners, I felt the 11b was better in both performance and sonics by my other tuners. In the past, I used to use 2 tuners in my system, one for DX'ing and one for the best sonics. These days, I'm just using one tuner, a Sansui TU-717 which is the best compromise for me between performance vs sonics.

The 11b is a great tuner for DX'ing, but it's sonics are just average compared with other tuners that you can buy in the same price range or even cheaper. I also own an Onkyo T-9090 II that IMO is an all around better tuner than the 11b.

As far as the ACCD, it's only useful if you're getting multipath interference.
