Yes, the title's a bit tongue in cheek but recently I've acquired some new digital gear/software and I've been ripping vinyl and 15IPS 2 track tapes to digital and the results have been surprisingly good. As a result I wanted to share my experiences and to enquire as to what the equivalent experiences of various members may have been in this area.
Here's my main system.
Vinyl playback: VPI classic SE turntable with Miyajima Madake cartridge, Modified Hovland HP-100 preamp with custom 20:1 SUT. Modified ML Montis with added sub woofer + miniDSP, Sennheiser HD-800S headphones, Stax SR-L700 headphones, Rogue M180 power amps. Home made cables.
Digital rip: Hardware; Korg DS-DAC-10R, Topping D50, custom variable gain output buffer amp. Software; IZotope RX-7 elements, Korg Audiogate. All rips stored on a laptop and backed up. Playback via USB 2.0 through a central powered hub. Separate analog supply for the D50. Playback via JRiver and Foobar2000.
The process was not without problems. I took the signal to be digitized from the record output of the Hovland and fed it directly to the Korg- putting it in parallel with the feed to the recording inputs of my tape deck, then started digitizing at 192kHz/24bits.
At first the process seemed to be going well. I adjusted the gain on the recording software to peak the input at -6dBv and then ripped the Recut Records issue of " Beethoven Choral Fantasia" with Katchen/Gamba.
After I was finished I exported the file and processed the output using RX Elements- normalizing the gain to just below full scale for the max level and using the software to de-click and de-clip the rip.
The result was just terrible. It didn't even need an AB to know that what was digitized was a pale image of the original vinyl. This was very disappointing, and completely contrary to what was expected based on the Korg's reputation.
So I tried to "debug" the system.
I evaluated the Hovland preamp record output. I found that there were two issues.
The first was that even well below clipping the output seemed to be audibly distorted despite its low output impedance (about 350 ohms).
It turns out that the distortion gradually increases as the load drops from 100k to 10k and then rapidly as the load falls below 10k. The tape deck was presenting a 10k load, and the Korg a 47k load, so the output was being overloaded! So, the tape deck connection had to go. I don't record onto tape, so that was OK.
It helped, but there were still many clipping events reported by the software.
The second issue was the absolute signal level to the Korg.
The max output from the record output before clipping is +11dBv, but the max input before clipping into the Korg is +6dBv. So a 6dB attenuator was needed. I tried setting the Korg input gain to -6dB, but that did not help. I then tried a commercial in line 6dB attenuator. That too failed as it loaded the record output too much.
In the end I had to hack an RCA cable and add a 47kohm series resistor at the input of the ADC to pad the level down. I checked the bandwidth of the plugged in cable (>100kHz) and calculated the additional noise contribution (negligible...) and tried again.
I set the Korg line input gain permanently to 0dB and monitored the peak on Audiogate to see if any excursion to the clip level occurred- and none was seen.
Next I imported the file to Rx and went through the same process- this time no clips were detected and a very small number of clicks, so I had no reason to do any processing besides normalizing to set the max levels just below full scale.
The results were extremely good and I've now digitized a number of LPs (Janis Ian Breaking silence 45RPM, several Decca Beethoven, Mercury Respighi the Birds etc.) and several 15IPS tapes ( Dark side of the moon, Kind of Blue, Elgar cello concerto/Dupre etc.).
Brief ABX testing with the output levels matched between the vinyl/tape outputs and the DAC output was attempted with myself and a couple of audiophile friends and none of us could reliably tell which was which. More extensive listening awaits, but the result is extremely encouraging.
So, all in all, I would say that it was a very successful effort and I would definitely recommend it to those who would like to capture the sound of vinyl and tape but have the convenience of digital, and not just for portability reasons.
However, my experience also illustrates how easy it is to get the digitization process badly wrong.

I'm going from LP to pre-amp, on to Mac analog inputs, letting the computer A/D capture at 24/96, and saving/archiving as raw AIFF.

VinylStudio does the recording and cleanup (click-n-pops, levels, etc.) as needed, then encode to FLAC/ALAC for in-home playback, and AAC for in-car (have my entire CD collection, 550+, on a 64GB USB stick for on-the-road!).

Home playback thru iTunes on a MacBookPro dedicated "JukeBox", no separate DAC. Haven't done any real-time A/B testing for differences, but audio sounds great to me from memory.

I'm always keeping an eye out for reasonable external A/D converter (DIY or commercial), but the options are sparse. The Korg is enticing, but out of my budget for now.

Are you saving as uncompressed 24/196 or compressed (FLAC or other)?

Are you using Audiogate software RIAA EQ? If so, how good is it?

I've tried both 24/192K and DSD and I cannot hear the difference. DSD64 files are a bit smaller than uncompressed 24/192k and DSD128 are a bit larger. FLAC compressed 24/192k files are about the same size as DSD64.
However DSD has a major disadvantage- it doesn't allow me to process/normalize the digitized signal unless it is converted to PCM. As a result I've decided to stick with 24/192 PCM as it saves an awful lot of messing about. As far as I can tell the actual real dynamic range i.e. that where conversion artifacts and noise appear, is about 18bits below the peak recorded level, so scaling the output by up to 12dB (2 full bits) within the spec.d 24 bit range of the DAC seems to not affect the perceived output except that now all of the recordings have identical peak signal levels, which is very convenient. I have no problem with FLAC'd PCM output. It really is bit perfect. Anyone that claims that it sounds different from the source wav file is deluding themselves.
Audiogate can export FLAC files directly, and In fact RX elements decompresses the FLAC file to process the file as a wav and then recompresses afterwards.
You can save the complete files at each stage of the process, and going through each of the versions ex post facto and listening to the progression has been interesting...
The Korg is not suitable for a MC cartridge so I've never tried the DSP RIAA etc. characteristics. The Hovland is pretty darn close to being perfectly RIAA compliant- while the Madake is definitely not.
By the way, I also have a number of downloaded DSD128 titles and ripped SACDs (DSD64) that I also play back from the laptop. The USB hub also hosts a remote control unit that makes the system very convenient. That's another reason for not using DSD- no software volume control is possible, so I have to rely on the knob of the Hovland.
The remote control unit does not audibly affect the operation of the conversion/playback and I cannot hear any ground loops or other artifacts when all three USB devices are active. However, just to be sure I disconnect the USB connection to the D50 during record and turn off the power amps and listen using the HD-800S headphones plugged into the Korg to avoid any acoustic feedback to the analog source.

I go cart -> flat MM instrumentation amp -> Benchmark ADC-1 -> Tascam DA-3000 -> MiniDSP OpenDRC-DI (for RIAA) -> Benchmark DAC2 DX for the monitors. In my main system it's the same less the DAC2 DX as I go to a miniDSP 4x10HD that is my crossover.

It's far easier to find and correct clicks before RIAA, and DSP RIAA is far more accurate than any typical analog filter could ever hope to be. That, and a lot of lab test records don't use RIAA, rather they use only the lower turnover, etc.

Why 192k? Because I was consistently able to identify a 48k/44.1k rip vs. a 96k. I was also more than 50% able to identify a higher resolution than 96k, but not to a sufficiently above random chance level to make me declare that it was real.
However I then pondered- why not just stick with the 192k? I have a 9mm thick 2.5" 2T HDD in the laptop which, with FLAC, gives me about 1000Hrs of recording or about 1500LP equivalents, so why not? Same argument for 24 bits vs, say 20 bits, which would seem to suffice. The DAC can accept 32bits, but that seemed completely pointless.

By the way, the preamp is within +/-40mdB versus the ideal RIAA 20-20kHz, and the -3dB point is c. 300kHz, whereas the cartridge is within +/0.5dB 20-8kHz and rises to +7dB or so at c. 20kHz with the 200ohm low cap load that is usually used. With "optimized" cartridge loading (c. 0.68uF cap, 100 ohms) it manages to be +/- 1dB 20Hz- 12kHz and about +3dB at 18kHz and -3dB at c. 30kHz. The Madake designer prefers to operate the cartridge with minimal load capacitance and the higher R as he thinks that it sounds better- although I disagree.

Isn't that the truth! Even the range of tools available in "consumer" software like VinylStudio is extensive and tempting. As I learned the software I made more changes eventually to the detriment of the music so the pendulum swung back to minimal corrections, mostly click/pop removal. I had to step back and ask why I was digitizing my records in order to decide what rate, resultant storage needs, DAC, ADC etc. There is a big difference between the gear and time to create archival level recordings and those good enough for casual/background/iPod/car listening. The choice of how exacting to get is up to the individual and it is fine if the justification is "...just 'cause I can." I will say my appreciation of clean records increased when I started digitizing some of my records.

That's where doing it pre-RIAA shines as they stand out more. Especially useful when you do manual correction as I do.
 
If you don't mind my asking, how does one obtain a two-track 15 IPS reel-to-reel tape of DSOTM? Is this a copy of the master tape meant to be used for cutting LPs, or did someone issue this as an ultra-expensive consumer product?

It is a stereo mix of the original quad master used for LPs in I believe 1973 or 1974, and not a commercial release. Other than being a bit noisy due to it being, what, a third generation copy, it's just marvelous. Much better than any reissue LP that I've heard and mostly better than the original UK quad LP from that era that I also own. I obtained it from a verified source in the UK together with KInd of Blue and Sergeant Pepper, both of which are also superb.

Many of my other tapes are protection copies from a CBC station in Canada or bought from some of the new release tape companies out there in the UK, Italy etc.
I don't have much, if anything, from the US other than from Yarlung records.

Interesting that the issues were in the analogue part of the setup, not on the digital side.
Yes, I agree that digital copies of analogue sources can sound great and the ability to fix clicks/pops makes it very attractive. My issue is that the process is so laborious that I couldn't face doing it for a whole record collection. For me it would have to be for selected items only.

The process has become so straight forward that I simply do it automatically each time I play an LP or tape. Because it doesn't require any preplay to normalize the gain and the software can, essentially, select the appropriate correction algorithms it really just takes a few mouse clicks and a bit of typing to get a minimally invasive rip and that can always be followed up later with a more thorough assessment. The hardest part is splitting up and naming the tracks, and so far I've "avoided" doing that.

Yes, that makes sense. Doing it over a period of time as you play records that you would play anyway seems a lot less daunting than setting out with the intention of digitizing a vinyl collection over a weekend.

Interesting. I know the provenance of the tape recording in this instance so it's certainly not a copy of a DVDA, although based on the sound of the one and only DVDA that I have (Decca, Pavarotti, La Boheme, with the container removed and ripped to PCM on my laptop) that would not be a bad thing. As I alluded to, the tape is pretty noisy, and listening to the noise stepping up as play begins and goes through the progression of recording/copies that it experienced, is well, enlightening, and makes me wish that I could get access to the tape a generation or so earlier. It's not Dolby and it was recorded on a pair of Studer A820s or A810s (I don't remember which).
