The Ventures first drummer

The General did great! His replacement, Mel Taylor (RIP), was awesome and one of my early influences.

Very cool. :thmbsp: Not being a true Seattle native, it took me a long time to realize the Ventures were from around here. I can't say I was a huge fan, growing up in PA & Ohio, but I'd definitely heard of them. :thmbsp:

They were pretty much the US version of Britain's The Shadows. On a side note, if you were a budding guitar player in early 60's England, you were likely influenced by The Shadow's Hank Marvin.

Actually, there was another drummer in between. Mel Taylor replaced Howie Johnson, who had replaced George Babbitt. Johnson died in 1988.

Thanks for the clarification anytune, I wasn't aware of Howie Johnson.

My friend Bruce Gary was friends with Mel Taylor, Buddy Rich and quite a few more greats. I doubt any military musicians were in that group of friends.
As a drummer he was a tour de force to listen and watch, simply stunning.
He was the drummer for The Ventures later Japan Tours.
Bruce Gary RIP:tears:
