The vintage engines thread

Believe it or nutz, I knew a boy who had a 1969 Galaxie 500 ex-Fire Chief's car that had the 427 cammer in it. He took me for a ride thru downtown Chattanooga in it, that damn thing would about leave the earth...

25 years ago, I used to fool around with drag racing and buying and
selling old camaros and novas ect.. and I built a bunch of small
block chevy's a big block or 3 ,a few pontiacs and fords.
My favorite engine I built and your going to laugh was a 307 chevy.
I used the stock crank and pistons and put in an L-82 350 corvette cam
and heads on it. I put it in a 1979 camaro with headers and stock
rearend. It had an edlebrock performer manifold and I jetted down a
holley 600 vac sec carb. It was no burner or anything but that was
the smoothest running engine with a wide power band that I ever
built. I would like to try another one day, same basic combination
but with more compression. Those 307's were not well thought of
back in the day but probably more from the 2 barrell carb and small
valve heads heads more than the bore and stroke. I think it was
actually a 283 block and 327 crank if I am not mistaken.Just the
opposite of a 302 chevy.

Not true the Hemi was banned as well when NASCAR declared that all engines had to be production based. The next year Mopar put the 426 in street cars making it legal. And of course a cammer would be illegal in stock eliminator as you could not buy a Ford with that engine in it.

Ford's plan was cut short, however; although Ford sold enough to have the design homologated, NASCAR effectively legislated the SOHC engine out of competition (despite permitting the hemi), and the awaited 1965 SOHC vs. Hemi competition at the Daytona 500 season opener never occurred. This was the only engine ever banned from NASCAR. Nevertheless, the 427 found its niche in drag racing, powering many altered-wheelbase A/FX Mustangs (after NHRA banned it from stock classes),[22] and becoming the basis for a few supercharged Top Fuel dragsters, including those of Connie Kalitta, Pete Robinson, and Lou Bany (driven by "Snake" Prudhomme).[22]

I'm a chevy guy but I think ford is king with their 1100ci all aluminum block and head, twin overhead cam, dual magneto v8. It weighs only about 50lbs more than a big block chevy. And yes, that's not a typo, it's an 1100ci v8!:thmbsp:

You forgot to mention this beast was built during WWII !
A hell of an engine, if you've ever seen a modern Ford Duratec it's fairly obvious where it came from!

Here's a Youtube link where someone put one of these in a Mustang.
