Thiel CS2 Help

I’ve acquired a pair of Thiel CS2 speakers. Everything looks to be in original condition. One of the 8” woofers has alot of cracking on the rubber surround and there is a slight gap between the dust cap and the coil. I’d like to replace the drivers altogether. Would anyone know a model number for a drop in replacement woofer?

I'd highly recommend against this. Thiel used very high quality custom drivers, and the enclosure would have been designed around them. Much better to just get them repaired.
 
Do you know if you must remove the woofer from the cabinet to replace the surrounds? I removed the 4 screws holding the woofer in place but the thing Won’t budge. I’m hoping I can replace while keeping the woofers intact. Thanks for any help!
 
Not all 8" drivers (or any size driver) use the same surround. There are certain measurements needed to get the proper fitting surrounds. Certain lips (edges of the cone) to account for. Distance between the start and edge of the roll (bump), etc
Maybe you'll be able to find rubber surrounds for Thiel CS2 speakers. If not, measurements might be needed

Thiels are good speakers, using the proper surrounds really should be done.
Ever notice how one pair of size 9 shoes aren't the same as another companies size 9? Or size 9 sneakers aren't the same size as a pair of size 9 golf shoes?
How to measure for surrounds below, not saying buy from this company but these are the measurements needed to get the proper surrounds. One note, the fact the Thiels have rubber surrounds might make this a bit more difficult.

It will be very difficult, if not impossible, to replace the surround without removing the speakers.

I too am confused about the gap you mentioned, and am curious about the cracking of the existing surround. I have a set of CS2s, but have never pulled the woofers.

Perhaps you could upload some pics showing the gap and the cracking?

BTW, the surrounds should probably be replaced on both woofers to maintain the same performance.

I just removed all of the surrounds, it was broken down badly. I'm ordering new rubber ones today
 
Might be helpful to watch a youtube video or two on how to refoam. Also, there are 3 main ways to center the voice coils.
Failure to properly center them can result in coil rub and having to recenter them (if the surround is still able to be relocated) or having to buy another set of surrounds and trying again.

Thiels former director of manufacturing bought up Thiel's inventory when the company was shut down, and may be able to provide some assistance.

Also, if you can see into the cabinet thru the dustcap, it seems to me that the cone would have to be separated from the former. If so, this will need to be addressed.
