Thinking about trying a MC cart, compliance q's

I have an ART9 on my VPI Classic. It's a great match. I have heard slightly better sonics from a few Transfiguration carts on that table but the compliance was all wrong and they could not track difficult passages. The ART9 sails through everything with ease.

@truck have you tried contacting VPI to see what they recommend for your table/tonearm? I know they often recommend Dynavector cartridges for use with their turntables, but I'm sure there are other brands and models they have experience with.

I have two turntables and am running LOMC cartridges on both. I run a Denon DL-301 MkII on my Harman Kardon T60 (tonearm effective mass - 8.0g) and a Dynavector 20x2L on my VPI Hw-19 Mk3 with an Audioquest PT6 tonearm (effective mass = 13g). Your tonearm falls right smack in the middle of mine, in terms of effective mass. Either cartridge should work with your tonearm. The Denon is higher compliance and likes a low mass tonearm. So, if you go with the Denon, keep the mounting hardware as light as possible (aluminum, instead of brass).

The Denon is a great sounding cartridge and a bargain for a LOMC cartridge. It's a great entry into the low output moving coil class of cartridges. The Dynavector is even better, but costs almost 3x as much. Both have their fans, and I think you'd be happy with either, depending on your budget.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Hana I mentioned earlier; https://audiokarma.org/forums/index...a-mc-cart-compliance-qs.963064/#post-14865537
I spoke with one of the techs at Upscale Audio, where I bought the turntable. He gave me several options and his opinion on some I mentioned. Would be nice too hear them first, but that's probably not going to happen.

Interesting. The specs, design (nude microline diamond, aluminum cantilever, 0.4mV output, etc.) and cost are very similar to the Dynavector 20x2L. Of course, that doesn't mean they will sound the same, but likely have a similar overall level of quality.

Don't think I can go wrong with either one.

Hi, It is easy to find out if your arm/cart are a good make. Just look at the Ortofon compliance chart

The ART9 is a very nice cart, however I found very fragile. only cart I have owned & I've owned over 40, that I managed to break the suspension on. Only owned it 2 weeks!!, luckily insurance payed out
But remember Japanese quoted compliance is a 10hz not 100hz as US/Euro cartridges are.

Cheers

Got the Hana mounted and the unipivot tonearm dialed in. Spinning some Steely Dan, wife's choice tonight. Only the 2nd side so needs some break in, but nice bottom end and extended highs, but not out of balance. I was a little worried as my speakers have horns, but not harsh at all.

You could always try a High out put Dynavector. I use a 20X and a 20 X 2 with a 10X5 as a spare for two different TT's. One is the mark Levinson Version of a Prime Signature with a VPI Fat boy Gimbaled arm with an electronic controlled two speed drive assembly. The 20 X 2 and the 10 X5 work perfectly with the 10.5 inch arm IMG_1306.jpeg

I've run Dynavector 20XL and 17D3 Kart LOMC's in the past, and currently use a Lyra Clavis and a Lyra Delos on my VPI unipivots, all with very good results. I've also installed Dynvector XV-1S, Benz Ruby, Ortofon Ti Winfield, and Ortofon MC-Anna LOMC's on VPI unipivot 'arms for friends. Again, all were excellent matches and sounded great. Finally, I have another friend with a VPI Prime and he switches back and forth between a VAS Nova and a Hana SL (mounted on different 'arms).
