This Day in Jazz

This Day in Jazz - December 22

Four bands record in 1947: Stan Kenton "Interlude"; Dizzy Gillespie "Woody 'n' You"; Duke Ellington "On a Turquoise Cloud"; Fats Navarro/Dexter Gordon "Index"

Bassist John Patitucci born 1959 in Brooklyn, NY.

Red Onion Jazz Babies record "Cake Walking Babies" From Home, with trumpeter Louis Armstrong and soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet, 1924.

Pianist Ronnie Ball born 1927 in Birmingham, England.

Wow. Where do I start. First, thanks for posting that Reggae. I'd never heard it before, that I know of. ;)
I agree with the first comment I read. Especially the "Beautiful Solo" Fats takes. It's great.

Early Miles sounding like Fats? Not sure. I've got a big Miles collection. I'll have to re-listen to his early stuff. Maybe he does. Wouldn't surprise me. My first take is, "well, maybe a little".

Good stuff.

This Day in Jazz - December 23

Trumpeter/singer Chet Baker born 1929 in Yale, OK.

Saxophonist Frank Morgan born 1933 in Minneapolis, MN.

Coleman Hawkins records "The Man I Love" 1943

The first Spirituals To Swing concert is held at Carnegie Hall, 1938.

I'm listening to some of my Chet Baker in memorial today. ;)

This Day in Jazz - December 24

Wayne Shorter records Speak No Evil 1964.

Drummer Warren "Baby" Dodds born 1898 in New Orleans, LA.

Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk record Bag’s Groove 1954.

I'm with you, Reggae. I truly enjoy Wayne Shorter. I must have played "Night Dreamer" (His Blue Note Debut Album) until the grooves wore out when I first acquired it (1983 ish). Oh, and I enjoyed every minute of wearing those grooves out. Happy Holidays.

This Day in Jazz - December 25 - Merry Christmas

Bandleader/singer Cab Calloway born 1907 in Rochester, NY.

Trombonist/bandleader Kid Ory born 1886 in La Place, LA.

Pianist/organist/composer Don Pullen born 1941 in Roanoke, VA.

Thanks Gents.

I thought that it would be a good way to celebrate Jazz, as well as learn a bit about Jazz history. I know I've learned quite a bit already.

Many times, when I research the history, I end up playing Jazz based on items mentioned on that day. It's also cool that Reggaenaut posts links related to the day's Jazz mentions.

This Day in Jazz - December 26

Guitarist John Scofield born 1951 in Dayton, OH.

Bassist Monty Budwig born Dec 26, 1929 in Pender, NE.

Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane records "Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?" With trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, 1958.

Awesome link. And who would have guessed that a song from the musical "Cinderella" would ever be a Jazz classic? Then again, who would have thought "My Favorite Things" would ever be one of the great Jazz Classics?

Also, listening to the music thanks to your link, Rege, I remember how talented Freddie Hubbard was. So many always think Miles Davis when they are asked for a fairly contemporary Jazz Trumpet artist. Hubbard was also a superior talent.

Coltrane? What more can I say. To me, he's the Mozart of Jazz.

This Day in Jazz - December 27

Tenor saxophonist Ben Webster records "Old Folks" with alto saxophonist Benny Carter and bassist John Kirby.

Bassist/author Bill Crow born 1927 in Othello, WA.

Pianist Walter Norris born 1931 in Little Rock, AR.
